HD500 Gain on metal/ Rock amps

Thanks to everyone I'm well into the unit now and working nicely, but I've been sat since 9.30am creating patches for gig this weekend. I'm working off the superb 16 Full Amp preamp  bundle that I got off here. Now the question.

I've read over the years that Sambora's sound of 80's, Gary Moore, Brian May, EVH, Noel Gallagher, Angus Young all claim to use natural gain or overdrive off their amps through sheer volume and amps gain. No matter what I do plugged into my ELX115 Powered Speaker, If I use the Marshall JCM the gain is nowhere near to what these guys can get. What I'm doing is also having to add a distortion patch to get close, but I thought the amp gains would be enough. I've run out of amps to think of as the Marshall is the last in chain before it turns nu metal, also tried Soldano Crunch.

I'm going back down again to try. I know I will be told to use the metal amps but these amps sound like the Slipknot, NU Metal sound which is not what I'm after ( btw I love Slipknot ) even after tweaking they deliver the nu metal thump, not the cleanish Sambora distortion.

Sorry to bend your ears again, but the more I learn, the more I want to know. Many thanks for any suggestions.

I own a Marshall JCM900 and compared it to the sound of the PODHD's Marshall and was surprised how much they sounded alike.

In the PODHD I typically use the Pre versions of amps.  For example I use the AngelF-BallPre (or whatever it's called) and run that back into the effects return of the Marshall amp using the Studio Direct option.  I have my inputs set to Guitar on 1 and Mic on 2.  I'm getting plenty of gain without using something like a TubeScreamer in front of it.

One patch I really enjoy is using the Park with a Vintage Pre infront of it...Dime the drive and use the Vintage pre to get the extra bit...But that is more low gain tone like ACDC rhythm tone...

The Soldano crunch channel is the one I use the most....I find it to be one of the most flexible models out of the bunch...You can get a decent clean tone out of it...the drive covers a lot of area...

If you're after high gain, very little is going to get you there other than slamming your amp somehow.  Guitarists have been doing it for years, the most famous method is taking a tube screamer, turning the gain down and maxing out the level.  You could do this with just a clean boost, but the tubescreamer adds an EQ that is generally desirable for high gain playing.  Your milage may vary on that point.  But mainly, if you want high gain, you're going to need some sort of boost (like the level on a distortion pedal) between you and the amp.  The vast majority of Meambobbo's patches use this.

The jcm model's default master volume is 50% - loud as hell but not a cranked Marshall. If you dime Drive and the Master Volume DEP, you should have plenty gain. All the other high gain models have plenty enough gain in the preamp. The others already have the master volume dep at 100% by default. If you can't get enough gain by cranking drive, you need a boost in front.

Most of why I use a distortion effect in front the amp model is not really for the boost but the eq and possibly some drive (mild for compression and a bit more to layer distortions)

Start with your pickup height.  This is where the amount of gain starts and if you are not getting enough here you are simply trying to compensate through the rest of the chain.  You want it as close as possible without getting any artifacts or weird frequency response.  This also differs depending on the pickups you use, so don't just measure someone elses and try to copy.  Use your ears.

Also, make sure you have the inputs 1 and 2 of the POD on Guitar and Same respectively.  If you have the second input set to something else you may lose gain going into the amp depending on how you have the FX chain set up.

The Park and the Plexi, although they sound great, do not have enough gain alone to create the sound you are going for.  The closest I have found is the Soldano Crunch.  If you use a tube screamer in front of the Park or Plexi, as described above, you will get the sound you are looking for.  You have to remember that EVH, for example, had a somewhat special Marshall Plexi that he used and everything was cranked on 10 (dimed as he said).  For that amp it worked great.

Probably what you are going for is the sustain you get from having a certain amount of distortion, not the distortion itself.  That's why I would love for Line 6 to add a Friedman-type amp to the line up.  Basically this would be a Plexi with an extra gain stage and a little better EQ.  Perfect for what you are going for and what I have been searching for.
