  1. It's Madness. There's so many tonal combinations just within the amp Block when it comes to the Cartographer.

I like pulling the master volume almost all the way back and then almost maxing up the two drives, keeping bass mids and treble under 5, cutting the presence completely and adding depth to get some low end back. Heavy heavy heavy.

Then for a sparkly clean sound, bias at 10, raising the master volume up some, taking Drive 1 almost all the way down and keeping drive 2 around 7

You can create a huge tonal pallette with snapshots and this one amp.

  2. I've had my Helix floor for over a year now and I've had dropouts left and right. I've gone as far as sending it in for service but will Volkman at Line 6 says that the MCU DSP board has been replaced and they've tested it at their facility and everything seems to be fine. I get it back here at my house and it's the same story. Four computers, 11 USB cables later and I'm tearing my hair out over here.

Every other piece of USB gear I have works just fine with all of these cords and computers including audio interfaces and My Line 6 pod hd500x.

I really hope a solution comes to either one or both of us

  3. I was really excited for the new editor and hoped that it would solve my USB connection issues. Sadly this is not the case and I'm still experiencing dropouts left and right. Otherwise, I still don't get to play with anything because I have a very sick two year old throwing up everywhere. I'm looking forward to the long weekend

  4. Agreed, those "should" work and obviously don't. Eat that sandwich a bite at a time. What I would try- Remove all Line-6 software (drivers, editors, EVERYTHING Line-6), and then just reinstall the editor and see if it connects. Then try the backups. DONT add in the audio interface drivers just yet (if possible) and see it the editor software is stable.

I've tried that a few times. Even tried it again yesterday. It's silly because my HD500X will connect to its editor no problem for great lengths of time

  5. You could always drop your low cut if you have any on a cabinet block to let more looseness through. The amps deep editing parameters definitely impact the feel.

In the full metal preset pack that I made a while back I included snapshots loosely named "Focused" or "scooped" where I made the Focused snaps tighter and midrange pushed, while the Scooped snaps sound a little looser. I edited those DEPs along with the obvious on-the-surface eq changes.

Amps that include a depth or resonance parameter make tightening and loosening easier. Bringing up the hum adds subharmonic content to your tone and can give a looser feel.

  6. Thick gauge and under 20 ft long. Neutrik connectors and if not they will get replaced with them. I don't think I've bought a quarter inch TS cable for guitar in quite a few years. I've only inherited damaged ones and fix them up. I use a G10 Wireless unit so I barely use the ones I have

  7. The Metal Zone pedal is actually quite synonymous with certain genres of metal so it makes sense that people would try to get that sound.

That's the only relevant thing I have to say on the subject. I personally don't try to chase that sound

  8. A few firmware versions back my Helix crashed and I lost every single one of the presets I built. I was pretty miffed about it at the time but it wasn't hard to recreate those patches for the better with the knowledge I gained along the way.

For the past few months I've been making free preset packs so everything gets saved and archived in my computers these days.

  9. I've gone through: 4 computers (1 dell desktop, 2 dell laptops and 1 mac mini), at least 10 different USB cables, tried both powered and unpowered USB hubs (2 of each), played the Uninstall/reinstall game over and over, sent my Helix Floor in for its horrible USB connectivity.

My Helix will only connect for a few minutes whether I'm trying to record or edit.

    It's very frustrating, I agree.

  10. You got it a little twisted. It's more like different listening levels produce different listening results. Like you wouldn't want to take a preset that you made at 2 a.m. with your speakers on minimum volume while your parents are sleeping and try to blast that through a cranked PA and expect it to sound the same.

The same thing applies for the kind of speakers you're listening to. If your running Helix through a combo or some headphones, you need to run those presets through a combo or some headphones.

Load yourself up a blank preset, throw on both of the matchless amps, throw in a compressor, an Overdrive and go to town. Try to run that preset through a PA system somehow to fine-tune it

  11. Yes I have that but I'm talking the main output. Trying to balance the volume between presets or as the band starts playing a little louder I'm trying for the overall volume not just in each preset.

Some folks remedy this by placing an actual physical volume pedal between the quarter inch out of their Helix and whatever monitor you're using, but no the built-in expression pedal cannot directly control the master volume of the Helix unit itself.

Your best bet is to place a volume pedal block on every preset if you really want to control it all with your foot, or just nudge the master volume knob up and down with your toe as you play
