  1. This is not normal/expected behavior. As was mentioned, try a different USB cable... as that's the most likely culprit. If power-management is enabled for the USB port where Helix was connected, after an extended period of time... the machine might have shut down that USB port to conserve power. However, this wouldn't explain the problem persisting after a reboot... or with other machines. If you've swapped the USB cable... and tried with several different machines (make sure to try Intel USB-2 ports), it's time to have the Helix checked out.

  4. This is true with many condenser mics. They capture a more "Hi-Fi", full bodied, detailed tone... but lack the aggressive nature of a dynamic. The CV4 maintains more of that aggressive quality than many condensers. Part of this is due to the frequency response being more flat (no presence peak in the mids). You can put a little bump in the mids... and it helps considerably. Try the 1.5kHz mid boost IR. Common practice is to mic with both a nice condenser and dynamic... and mix the two to taste. You get the best of both worlds...
  5. When playing in isolation, the tendency is to gravitate toward a larger/fuller sound. An SM57 (with no EQ) probably isn't the most inspiring mic for this type scenario. The "Thump" tone-shaping IRs add a boost at 150Hz. That'll help thicken up the SM57 sound. In a band/ensemble environment, too much bottom end and you wind up stepping on the bass and kick drum. It's a delicate balance of not neutering the guitar sound... and not killing low end clarity of the full mix. I'll create a Neve "Cali V EQ curve". Thanks for the suggestion. Working on some combination IRs as we speak...

  7. Wasn't referring to your example (or any others posted) when talking about the high-pass filter. ;) I just wanted to mention that... in case someone was finding the bottom end a little much. On distorted sounds, a high-pass filter before the Amp block does wonders... Glad you like the IRs... and the lack of "fizz". Ironically, no EQ or filtering was used during or after the capture process. Instead, we tried to get the sound "right" upfront... so no further filtering of the top-end was necessary. In regards to the bottom, I wanted to leave a little of the "boom" in there... because sometimes it's cool and it's easy to pull that out (high-pass filter) without otherwise affecting the tone.
  8. NOTE: I always use a high-pass (low-cut) filter prior to the Amp block. If you're hearing too much bottom end using the IRs... and you're not using a high-pass filter prior to the Amp block, please try doing so. It makes a world of difference (really tightens up and cleans up the bottom end). If you're also a Fractal user, I'd recommend doing the same (for the same exact reasons).

  11. As a point of reference, the Kemper Profiler is essentially able to "tone-match" the frequency spectrum... and match the non-linear distortion aspects of most any mic'd amp/cab. IOW, It's taking the same type of process much further. Extremely useful in this case.
  12. I can see your points. Keep in mind that those same types of sounds (clean to heavy drive) can sound appreciably different with various amps/cabs. Whether or not that matters to you... is an aesthetic choice. The audience won't care. Tone-matching just allows you to get closer to specific sounds.
  13. I think tone-matching would be a nice added feature. In the meantime, you can do tone-matching manually (if you have the appropriate DAW software and knowlege).
  14. I was just playing with the Cabs here... One goal of this library was to get the FRFR experience a little closer to the sound/feel of a real cab. I know FRFR is a different animal... but I think we're getting closer.

  17. Question regarding the Neve tone-shaping IRs: Does anyone have suggestions for other tone-shaping options? I tried to cover the basics: Bass roll-off Cut mud at 200Hz Slight boost at 800Hz Mid boost from 1.5kHz to 2.2kHz High boost As a user, are you missing any particular tone-shaping option? Is there a particular combination that you'd like to have?

  19. Very cool! Thanks for sharing that example. Has that "chug" without the bottom end getting too loose/flabby. Glad you like the IRs. If you record more... post a link.
  20. I included both 16Bit_48k and 24Bit_48k versions of the IRs (both Cab and Neve). Helix IR format is 16Bit 48k If you load the 24Bit versions, they'll be converted to 16Bit upon loading. The 24Bit IRs can be loaded in DAW software/plugins... or other hardware devices.
