  1. Well... I just spent £950 on a brand new one that's mostly gonna stay attached to my computer! I guess I have the pedal and the option to take it with me if I ever decided to join a band again, but really I could've saved myself £600! I didn't become a guitarist to save money, so **** it.
  2. In any case I probably won't be buying it. So, is it meant to sound exactly like the Floorboard/Rack?
  3. Yep, which is why sound alone isn't enough. I'm new to the Helix but there doesn't seem to be an obvious way to monitor your input, unless I'm missing something? I have a Kemper and on the front panel have an indicator for your input signal and your output signal, and various ways to lower the input levels so you know that the signal isn't too hot going in and isn't too hot going out, and then you control the input level in the DAW. Can you monitor this with the Helix or are you basically using the output level only?
  4. You should keep your guitar/bass/vocals etc levels between -18 and -12db when tracking. That way you have more headroom and you can mix and master louder without clipping. If you kept it lower when tracking and turned your monitors up instead you'd have much better and louder sounding mixes! In case you haven't, have a look at gain staging. That's why adding things causes volume increases; they all have their own output and add gain. I can slam the volume of the Helix in Logic if I want to using the output section on the Editor. If you can't do that then something isn't right, but it's perfectly acceptable to use that to set your guitar level.
  5. Not really. It's a $400 peice of software. Free returns and delivery are common. You're saving $300. People would put it on a credit card and just send it back.
  6. I just bought the Helix. Not sure if I'd need this really. I'd just use the Helix. It's got a pedal and o could connect a Variax if I ever get one. Plus I could use it to play live. But $99 is a good price. What if I got this and then sold the helix down the line? Couldn't someone buy a Helix, buy the VST for the reduced price and then just send it back? Just curious as to how his all works.
  7. Sweet. I've managed to set the clock to 48khz, so everything is currently being routed through the 18i8, which is much more convenient than having everything running on different things. So I'll let you know when I've done the reamping and how well it worked. Then I'll write it up just in case it helps someone else out.
  8. Yea. And then run a cable from the Helix to the 18i8 right?
  9. Okay cool. I got the Allure pack and a few free ones so I'm set for now. I found a nice one in that free pack. Made a little jingle with it. :)
  10. All of the above. I want some IRs that are suitable for cleans, edge of breakup and heavy rock tones (not metal).
  11. I don't mean to hijack, but what's a good IR pack to start with from ownhammer? I like Plexi, Bassman, Princeton and Orange Rockerverb type amps. Thanks.
  12. Okay so just to get it right. Guitar into Helix. Run a cable from the Helix Send to the 18i8 input. Let's say 1 Put a send block at the beginning of the preset, so it's literally just the dry signal. That means that input 1 should now be the dry signal, and the SPDIF should be the wet. Right? I can't find the input/output block on the Helix, is this one via the editor?
  13. I just said that... 😶
  14. That's a perfect level to record with. Won't you run out of headroom pretty quickly if you go any higher? But I think you can change the volume in the output on the editor.
  15. So how many are you getting in a pack? If it's that many perhaps the company's are doing themselves a disservice?
  16. Thanks! I've set the clock speed to 44 in the Helix as the Mix control refuses to allow me to set it to 48, but that seems to be working fine. I've got a signal. And do you know if you can reamp that way? I recorded a quick thing and it recorded both tracks wet. I've been looking at other threads and it appears people are a bit confused as to whether it will carry a wet and dry signal.
  17. Okay. And do I need to change any of the output settings on the Helix? Nothing is mentioned in the manual, in fact, it appears that SPDIF isn't mentioned once!
  18. I got it! Aside from getting to grips with it, I'm enjoying it. It's got some great sounds in there. I've heard some very digital like distortion and some awesome distortion sounds. I didn't like the Archetype too much I'm afraid! The deluxe vintage (I think it's called) with a tubescreamer was pretty tasty!
  19. The idea is, if I can put everything through my 18i8, I can track through it, reamp through it, and then with no fuss at all I can plug a microphone in, listen through headphones to the playback, sing, and also monitor another person singing as it has 2 headphone outputs. If I use the Helix as a USB interface I have to continually be changing the XLR cables from the Helix back to the USB interface, and changing the input/output source in the DAW when I want to record vocals and monitor a friend at the same time. Also, I have to keep bending down to change the master volume as I've got the unit under my desk as it's so big. The 18i8 is a small little thing and it's right in front of me so no bending down. Unless you know if a way to control this in the editor? It's much more convenient to route it all through the 18i8 and I was wondering if I could do it via SPDIF as I know how to use it well via mix control. I can also then just swap the SPDIF cables over quickly if I want to use my Kemper. I can set the clock speed to 44 or 48 on the Helix or 18i8. Does that make sense? Any ideas?
  20. I can set it to 48. But can I have all of the input and output via SPDIF into my interface? What do I need to change on my Helix? Or is reamping done by usb on the Helix? Can a wet and dry signal be sent via USB to my DAW? Thanks.
  21. Well I've just bought the Helix today but I also have a Kemper and I've always used it that way. It's easy just to have 2 cables going into the unit which I can then use for everything from playing, tracking dry and wet signals and then reamping etc. What's the most common way to track and reamp with the Helix?
  22. Hey all. I want to use SPDIF in/out as my only input and output source. So I want to play, track, reamp just with SPDIF. I can't figure out how to do that. I'm going Helix to Focusrite Scarlet 18i8 via SPDIF into a Mac.. I'm not getting any signal. What setting do I need to change? Also, can you control the overall volume of the unit with the editor? Thanks.
  23. I never use the stock presets ever. I'll take your advice! I was going to have a look on the custom tone site too and download a few of the popular ones too.
  24. I write Hendrix, pumpkins chillis type stuff. Classic rock tones to aternative distorted stuff. Here's one of my songs. All kemper, all me! https://soundcloud.com/demosandideas/give-me-my-remedy-2 Cool, well I'll definitely check that pack out and the stock ones. I always liked the idea of different mics. I think that feature was available on the 11R. I played around with mic placement and stuff on Amplitube, but the actual sounds let it down. I'm excited to comparw the Helix to the kemper. I might record dry tones and revamp with each. See what the best I can get with is.
  25. Thanks for replying. I run two Yamaha HS8's so I'm in stereo. I will definitely mess around with all the cabs and Mics and stuff. With the kemper community someone made loads of delay presets, loads of reverb, loads of cabs etc and just or them on the site. Anything like that? And the online exchange thing, are they all made with stock cabs? Are there quite a few decent presets?
