Thank you for this post. I originally tried to update my HX FX's firmware 3.80 from 3.71 on a Mac using HX Edit before reading it. My FX bricked... I followed the instructions here up to paragraph 12 without issue, but then the firmware update failed again; it failed multiple times too. For anyone in the same position, a couple of things that seemed to help me: Allowing accessories to connect (in Settings -> Privacy & Security) https://support.apple.com/en-gb/102282. That stopped the Mac OS prompt from intermittently popping up and (I suspect) interrupting the upgrade process. Choosing the 3.71 firmware first, which completed successfully first time. I then upgraded to 3.80, again, first time.

I struggled with this too on the HX FX, but found that the EHX Ctrl Knob worked for my needs (https://www.ehx.com/products/cntl-knob/). I leave the effect on at a very low, or zero level. I then use the Ctrl Knob to switch between two pre-set levels (i.e., for the Kinky Boost, the boost is either off or on). Works well, without taking up a foot switch on the HX FX, or squeezing another expression pedal onto my board. It needs a TRS cable to work (in the box) and only one of the two polarity settings seems to work. I think this should work too: https://www.oldbloodnoise.com/pedals/expression-ramper. The latter has polarity jumpers inside and swappable digital pots.
