noob recording question - HD500x I'm doing it wrong

Recommended Posts

Here's my issue in a rather large nutshell, like a coconut maybe...

I just got my HD500x a few days ago to replace an old Digitech GNX4. I'm connecting it via USB to a windows 7 laptop and Cubase 5.1.

I started off trying to use USB input from the Pod and outputting to the PC speakers. This causes serious latency for anything I'm recording (as i kind of expected from previous experiences with the old unit)

The only way I was able to get around this on my old GNX4 was to output the mix through the speakers minus the track I was currently recording and using a practice amp plugged into the line out from the GNX4 to hear myself. Id prefer not to rely on this ghetto setup anymore as I'm in an apartment now and the neighbors get cranky when I'm inspired at 2 am.

I tried last night to just use the HD500x for in and out, but unfortunately all i have are some powered external Altec Lansing PC speakers (with an 1/8 in stereo in) and the mix was not coming through the headphone jack on the Pod. I have been Googling for about 3 hours now and the only solution anyone seems to have is for me to invest another $500+ into an external audio interface and some studio monitors. I want these down the road but I need to get some tracks recorded in the next week or two for a project.

Let me finish by saying I'm a complete noob with Cubase as well, I used the Pro Tracks software that came with the GNX because it had a much smaller learning curve and I wanted to just record. Now I want to actually learn Cubase but perhaps all these changes at once were not the best idea.

Any ideas that don't involve purchasing more than $100-200 in additional gear would be welcome. I just want to lay down some tracks so I can send them to a friend with a real studio to do the actual production. I'd go there to record but hes an 8 hour drive away.

Will a dual 1/4" mono to 1/8" stereo y cable allow me to use the Pod line outs to these speakers and hear the backing tracks as well as the track im laying down? Will latency still be an issue?

Yes to the 1st question. No to the 2nd.

You're on the right track. The POD becomes your soundcard. Hence you need to connect your speakers to the POD outputs, and the adapter you describe will do it. You also need to configure Cubase to use the POD and its ASIO driver as your audio input and output device. Turn OFF the monitoring feature in Cubase. You do not need another audio interface. And you can also use the POD headphones output to monitor instead of your speakers.

It's also true that your monitored sound will be much better if you invest in studio monitors rather than your Altec PC speakers; but you can leave that to a later date if you want to do it at all.
