Fx Loop, MIDI and Use of Power amp vs Pre amp

I have been trying to figure out how to use the Fx Loop on the 500X,     My undestanding from what I have read is that this possibly is only to be used to route external effects through the send/return ports on the back of the POD.  Yes???   Without external effects, Fx Loop is of no use. (?)

How would this work on patches downloaded from Customtone that have an Fx Loop in the effects chain?   Or is there a way to assign effects within the Fx Loop block from HD Edit or the POD unit? Some patches I have downloaded with Fx Loop in the chain have no sound. Some do.  Appears I can turn off or set send/return to 0 to bypass this if there is no sound.   Not real sure.

Also was reading on MIDI control. Gots my head spinning.    I currently use two DT25's for Amp A & B and also use a L3 with I usually have set to MIDI Channel 3, left/right.   Really don't know if this is proper but it sounds good.

Then I read where pre amps are preferred when using POD with tube amps (DT's).  I have many patches with power amp versions and they seem okay.  Is this a problem?   Other than tweaking DEP parameters.

Assistance greatly appreciated!!!

  1. If the FX loop is on in a patch but no cables are plugged into the send and return you will end up with a muted signal (the routing is sending the output to the send but since there is no signal back there is no sound). All you need to do is remove that block from the patch and you should be good to go.

With the DT25 and L3 you should need to mess with midi at all - you can either use the standard audio outputs or the Line 6 Link output.

Since the DT already has a tube power amp, it is recommended to use the "pre" models since that will duplicate a standard setup (1 preamp, 1 poweramp) - that said, there is no "right" way and if it sounds good to you using the full amp model go for it. For me I've found that at low volumes the full amp sounds better and at high volumes the pre sounds better when running into a real tube amp/power amp.

Thank you dbagchee for your reply.  Really appreciate it.

I have been playing mostly at low volume so far, often in low volume mode, so perhaps the power amps are sounding good for a reason.  Good info to know when I crank it that I may want to change to pre amp versions.

I guess my question regarding the Fx Loop and your answer implies that external effects are in deed required in order to use this block.

The MIDI reference is to how I have the L3 set in HD Edit.  Currently I have DT25 head/cab as Amp A (panned left or center), DT25 combo as Amp B (panned right or center), then the L3 is assigned to MIDI Channel 3 with left/right signal. All via L6 Link.  This seems to work well but was wondering if there are other suggestions.

As you said, if it sounds good, go for it.   My rig is to put it mildly, sounding really good.  Would suggest a 2nd DT to anyone considering it.

Thank you again Sir!

Just point of clarification... MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) doesn't contain any audio, and is used to allow some devices (Synths, Computers, Rack FX) to "talk" to each other and to be controlled. L6 Link is not the same as MIDI, but is a proprietary way of sending digital audio between some Line6 products.
