st158791
• MODEL CONTROLLED BY: This is a global option that affects behavior for all Firehawk FX presets. • When set to FIREHAWK: The Firehawk FX sends the stored Variax Model & Tone Knob settings to the guitar upon the loading of a Firehawk Preset. If you adjust your Variax guitar's on-board settings, the Variax settings are captured and then stored within the Firehawk Preset. • When set to VARIAX: The stored MODEL & TONE KNOB POSITION Variax settings are not sent to the guitar upon loading a Firehawk preset. If you adjust your Variax guitar's onboard settings, these will be heard, but not captured or stored within the Firehawk preset. • TUNING CONTROLLED BY: This is a global option that affects the behavior of all Firehawk presets. • When set to FIREHAWK: The Alt. Tunings stored within any Firehawk Preset are sent to your Variax guitar upon recall of the Preset. • When set to VARIAX: The Alt. Tunings stored within any Firehawk preset are not sent to your Variax guitar upon recall of the preset. I'm new to the line6 products and I'm loving all the versatility that these devices have. One question, can you switch form• MODEL CONTROLLED BY Firehawk to Variax. In the manual it makes it seem like you can. But I haven't figured it out. Sometimes I just want to play with a ton of settings on the Variax and have nothing saved to the Firehawk preset, but it always keeps my last Variax settings. silverhead
You can only switch this setting using the app. You will find the global Model Controlled By parameter on the Variax page of the app. You cannot change this setting on the Firehawk device itself. This means you need to be careful about what state this parameter is in before you shut down the app, because the next time you turn on the Firehawk this setting is retained. If you left the setting on Variax, and do not bring your mobile device (with the app) to your next gig, all of the Variax settings you so carefully stored in the Firehawk presets will be ignored during your gig. st158791
Thanks for your quick response. When I choose the variax within the app, I'm not able to change controlled by. It always says controlled by Firehawk. I don't want that for every preset. I've tried pushing or sliding the icon but nothing happens. I guess its just a learning curve. I love the Firehawk and my Variax. I guess I'll have to be more careful when closing a preset.
silverhead
Note that it's a global setting - not changeable per preset. Also, you need to have the Variax connected via VDI, not the 1/4" jack.
saylar
I'm having success with the Firehawk changing my Variax models, but I can't get the Firehawk to change the tunings at all. I see the different tuning on my iPad, and I have all the "Controlled By" settings set to "Firehawk." I know it's working to switch guitar models as I change Firehawk presets, but it's not working for the tunings. Variax tuning selector is set to "model." Any ideas? silverhead
Try setting the Variax alt tuning knob to Standard.
saylar
Tried that, and all other alt tuning knob selector positions. Tried iPhone AND iPad (all settings point to "Firehawk" global control). Tried 2 different Variax (VDI) cables. Same results no matter what. Guitar models are changing fine with Firehawk control, just not tunings. String-specific "sliders" in app have no effect, either. BTW I have a JTV-59. Tried it with and without the battery installed. No difference. Tuner works fine (shows up on iPad and everything.) Then I tried connecting both 1/4" AND the VDI cable simultaneously, still nothing. (One cool thing I did notice here, though - you can connect 2 different instruments at the same time! One via VDI and one via 1/4" at the GUITAR INPUT jack - both are always on!) Have also tried all the 1/4" and XLR outputs in both AMP OUT and LINE OUT modes. Thanks
mcbeddall
I don't have a variable so I'm not sure if this will be of any help but according to the manual there is a setting on the app labelled "tuning controlled by" if you can find that you need to set it to firehawk

mcbeddall
Well you didn't actually mention the TUNING controlled by option by name so I thought you might have overlooked it, so there
silverhead
The next thing I would do is reinstall the JTV firmware. If you have custom models that you want to retain, use Workbench HD first to back up your existing models. If that doesn't resolve it, reinstall the Firehawk firmware. Again, back up any custom presets first.

Will try before next weekend's gig and let you know how it went.
saylar
Did the reflash on the Variax (JTV firmware re-install via Line6 Monkey), and it worked! Upgraded from version 1.7x to 2.x. Thanks for the suggestion! It was fairly tricky to save and reload my presets, but I eventually got that to work, too. Now ALL of the features between Variax and Firehawk are working - and I didn't have to reflash or update the Firehawk at all. BTW, the gig Friday night went great. I went straight from the Firehawk into the PA, but also used my amp just for monitoring. Sounded awesome. Thanks again! It's a new era now... Next week's gig should be even better!
