audionutmike
It dawned on me last night that since the latest FW update I'm hardly noticing the dreaded "crossover" distortion (or whatever it is/was). I use to notice it really bad on the Cali and the Panama. I'm going to run through things again when I get home today.

Charlie_Watt
Tube amps all have some Crossover Distortion - somewhat a function of how hot the Bias is set. There are other forms of distortion that are in some models because the real amp has it.
duncann
It's a very subtle crackling type sound overlaying the rest of the tone that seems out of place, doesn't fit, or shouldn't be there. A good way to get an exaggerated sense of this is if you have a bass guitar with an active EQ. Put a very weak battery in there and then listen to what that sounds like. It's similar to the crossover distortion. Some people can't seem to hear this. Sometimes I can, sometimes I can't. It's very subtle, and if you can hear it, it's easily ignorable, at least for me. Digital_Igloo
We often tweak presets and model defaults before a firmware update. At one point we dropped the Master Volume in a bunch of presets and leveled everything. Before that we fixed a bug that made the SM57 the default mic for every cab (OUCH!). One or more could be enough to explain the difference.
