Stereo pedals in parallel path sound "funny", why?

I've connected my new H9 pedal in stereo to FX 3/4, and it sounds great as long as I'm using a serial path after the amp.  I wanted to use a parallel path, to do some wet/dry stuff, but as soon as I drop the block down to 1B the tone changes to a 'back of the throat sound", like I've introduced some mixer/phase issues or something.

What are the recommended settings for using a stereo pedal in a parallel path?  Do I need to engage the kill dry on the H9?  Do I need to change the mix settings on the split?

Not sure what's going on there.

Phase cancellation... Since the H9 is a digital pedal, you're introducing latency compared to the other path, so the the dry signals are phase misaligned. Using the kill dry on the H9 should take care of it, yes.
