Windows won't recognize my POD HD 500X

If I go into Control Panel->Sound  Playback and Recording does not show my POD HD 500X as one of my choices.  However, in Control Panel "Line 6 Audio-Midi devices" does show up.  I'm plugged into my computer by USB.  when I turn on my POD I do get the beep that Windows knows it's there.

Anyone any ideas on how I can get Windows to play with my POD so I can play through it into my computer?

Edited to add:

I do have the latest driver, btw,  v4.2.7.6

unplug USB, power down HD500X, power up HD500X and let it boot and then plug in the USB while the HD500X is powered up. If you still have the problem, try reinstalling the driver.

Actually that worked and I did NOT have to reinstall the driver.  Thank you!

But now here is the problem du Jour.  I can only hear it if I have the "Master" turned all the way clockwise and the amp volume turned all the way clockwise and my guitar volume also all the way up.  With all those up if is far from loud.  I can hear it ok but I wouldn't think I need all those up.

Thanks again.

Check out the Line 6 Device applet in the control panel. There is a level there. I think there is also a USB volume on the HD iteself in the System Setup menu pages (hold View).  But I am not sure if that would be the problem...but it could be.

Quick question...What are you listening thru? Could it be that you are using the XLR outputs to drive speakers? The XLR outputs are NOT line level. Rather they are mic level to emulate the level or a real microphone.

ah ok...so you are using an extremely high latency configuration by doing that...You need to connect your speakers to the POD and select the HD 500X to be your soundcard (speakers). That is the only way to get zero latency hardware monitoring...Also, you volume issue should alleviate.

This is getting way above my pay scale.  Connect my speakers to the POD?!?!?!  Then when I'm playing music on my computer (cd's (yes, I still use physical media lol), YouTube, etc.) how am I going to get sound?  Do I need to switch the speakers all the time?  And my speakers just have the little plug.

Once again, Thank you.

Yes, the POD is intended to behave as your computer audio interface (soundcard) when you are using it for recording/playback...Your computer will playback and record via the POD. The configuration you are trying to do using the onboard card for playback is cumbersome and generally makes overdubbing quite problematic...I would suggest you get a little 1/8" TRS to 1/4" TRS adapter and plug your speakers into the headphone jack of the POD.

Let's be very clear.  I am not trying to do any configuration.  I don't have any planned configuration! lol  I'm just trying to get this d#$%ned thing so it will play through my speakers.

So in that Windows box above I tell it to use the "Speakers Line 6..etc"?  After I get the adapter and plug my speakers into it, of course.

And then at some point I'm going to be able to tell my DAW (Reaper) to use the POD?

Once again, Thank You.  Due to medical appointments and some other things going on it will be a day or two before I can go get that adapter.  If you don't hear back it's not because I gave up or lost interest!  Unless I find one of those adapters laying around.

No worries, it's just the configuration that you happened to land on...It's a little unusual because Windows usually defaults to the POD when it's plugged in...However, I am thinking that perhaps powering up the POD already plugged in might have something to do with the default staying on your computer soundcard...Nonetheless, if you are wanting to hear your POD and your computer with the ability to record and overdub using the POD without latency and get some volume, you need to connect your speakers to the POD. When you get into Reaper, you want to make sure you select the POD as your recording and playback. You can do that in the Preferences in Reaper.

btw you could also test your setup using a pair of headphones...

Thank you for all the help that you have been.  I feel like, if I knew where you are at, I should send you a bottle of Scotch (or your favorite spirit ) for all the help you have been.  As I said I'll be tied up for a couple days but then get the TRS adapter or test with the headphones and get back to you.

Thanks again for all your help and patience.

Woo hoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  If I tell my computer to use "Speakers Line 6 POD" for playback and then play something.  (I chose Debbie Davies' new album btw. ) The music comes through my headphones plugged into my POD!

Now to get that adapter so I can plug my speakers into the POD.

  • 3 weeks later...

It was good while it lasted.  It is still working fine as far as playing my guitar through it.  But if I am playing music from my computer through the speakers connected to my POD it will work fine for some period of time.  30 minutes? 60 minutes?  Then it just quits.  I get a message that my audio player is not responding.  If I try and play a YT video nothing.

I'm going to practice now and, as I said, music from my guitar through POD to speakers will be fine.  But to play music from my computer I'll have to reboot it again.
