HX Stomp and Disaster Area DMC-6D

hey!  lurker, first time poster, HX Stomp owner and i love it.

being a n00b with midi, i bought a very well-priced controller off Reverb, but i'm SO confused as to how to use it or if it's even usable.  this would be a Disaster Area DMC-6D, which is the previous gen of DA controllers.  i was under the impression that midi was universal, but the Stomp won't recognize the DMC in 'Learn' mode while i'm trying to set up a bypass on one of my blocks.  tried updating the firmware on the controller, having issues with that, too.

anyone willing to walk me through this?  or at least point me towards a thread that has some better info.  do i need to sell this thing and get a different controller?

It's an older model, but based on everything I see it should be able to work.

Have you checked YouTube videos and followed what they did?  Anytime you have used stuff there's always the risk it is broken.  Do you get any functionality from it?

it powers on and the LED updates when the buttons are pressed, but no i haven't experienced any actual midi functionality yet.

is there some sort of tutorial on how midi controllers work in general?  it's all way more opaque than i had anticipated.
