I did a search and did not find a direct answer to my specific question. My sons have been playing thier instruments for a few years and I'd like to record them playing together as they progress. The oldest has an electric guitar and we just bought the youngest an electric drum set for Christmas. I'm looking for a way to input their music into Apple's Garage Band. I've seen that the UX2 can input both guitar and drums (not MIDI) but can it import both instruments simultaneously and keep the instruments spearate in Garage Band? If so please elaborate on how I would set this up.

You can record two tracks simultaneously with the UX2, so yes, you could record them both at the same time and have them as separate tracks in Garage Band. The one thing to consider, though, is that the drums would probably sound best if recorded in stereo. Really, the best way to record electronic drums would be to take a separate output from each drum and a stereo track for the cymbals. That way you could apply different effects to everything. But if it's just for a rough demo, a stereo track would do fine. Mono would be OK, but I think I'd try to do stereo.

 

The other thing you could do with electronic drums is to record a MIDI track from the drum set. You're right, the UX2 doesn't do that, but you could a simple MIDI to USB adapter and record the MIDI track. Than it would be a pretty simple thing to create an audio drum track with that MIDI track using virtual instruments in GarageBand. The cool thing about that is that you don't have to commit to a drum sound while recording the part.

 

Sorry if this is more information than you want or need. As with most recording things, you can get as simple or as complicated as you want.

Found Roland UM-ONE mk2 and if I am correct I can attach that to the USB ports on the back of the Ux2. So I'd get the drums in MIDI and the guitar in analog. We'll see how it sounds Christmas morning. Thanks for the tip!

Well, you'd just connect the Roland to your computer with a separate USB connection from the UX2. The UX2 doesn't have any auxiliary USB ports on it.

Ah ok, I must be confusing it with a unit from another company I was looking at. No worries I have about a half dozen usb hubs floating around the house.
