Helix Floor thru Passive or Active input on amp

If the amps have effects loops, set the Helix outputs to LINE and run it into the effects return. Or use 4cm to have the option of using the amps' preamps or Helix preamps..

If you're running into the instrument inputs, use the passive inputs and set the Helix outputs to INSTRUMENT. If the amp clips then use the active inputs.

In either case, with the big knob either disabled or dimed you have Unity Gain.

Any reason the the effects loops as opposed to the front of the amps?

Stacking preamps is usually a recipe for mud. I could see a good clean bass amp having a useful EQ section running into the front end, though. Usually people will use preamps/drives on the helix and use the amp as a power section and speaker, so the Helix replaces all the amp controls.

Using 4cm, by setting a switch to toggle between the FX Loop block and a Helix preamp you get the best of both worlds - toggle the FX Loop OFF and the Helix preamp ON for a whole different sound, or toggle the FX Loop ON and the Helix preamp OFF to use your amp's pre/tonestack.

As gunpointmetal pointed out, using BOTH a Helix pre and you amp's pre (going straight into the front WITH a Helix pre) is a recipe for mud.
