Hi,i'm thinking of downloading the Native Demo & I have no idea(or not much)about using software,i have a PreSonus AudioBox USB & I have a question,

Is this interface box sufficient to give me a fair to good indication of the Amp modelling quality of the Native software & maybe further down the road a Helix hardware device ?

Hope this isn't a stupidly basic question,i really am a novice with this stuff(an old one) .

Cheers.

Hi Old-Rocker,

There are no stupid questions - and enough with the “old”! I’m a grey beard, but refuse to acknowledge the fact that I ever passed 21 (3 times over and more!).

O.K. your Presonus interface has both 44.1 and 48kHz sample rates available in the box and as 44.1kHz is twice Compact Disc quality, no problem. Simply grab the free demo version of Helix Native and give it a whirl. Nothing to lose, everything to gain. I would hazard a guess that you will be using Studio One as your DAW as it used to be bundled with the AudioBox. Anyhow, whatever you use, simply install the Helix Native plug-in software and it should be available to use from within your DAW. One thing to watch out for is “gain staging”, you may need to back off the input/output volume in Native to keep things clean. See comments from forum user “soundog” here:

Remember, once you start using Native, the demo time period starts to run down and you will be surprised how fast the time goes by.

Have fun!

Thanks, datacommando.so sounds as if my presonus should get me going,am I correct it thinking,i can download Native & use it as standalone software?or do I have to use a DAW ?.

When I typed DAW it felt a bit frightening,i have no idea how to go about setting that up(smiley face again).

Yes i'm a bit worried about the "trial" period,it will probably take me a week just to get it going.

What i'm trying to do is get Native working from my laptop(yes I actually have a laptop),to see if I can get my head round getting a good Amp sound(to my ears)with native, before I invest in a Helix device, which I would only use for playing live,i am getting too old(sorry) for lugging valve combos around.

So i'm getting together a few different playback options,FRFR/power Amp & 2x 12",my Combo s/r/making sure my presonus is reasonable/.,to sort of have all my ducks in a row, before I do the Download.

I've had a couple of miserable failures before with Modelling pedals,so with the improvements that have been made with Modeling since Helix(and a couple of others),i'm going to give it as good a shot as I can.

Hi again,

First up and most importantly – Helix Native is a software plug in and needs to be run from inside a Digital Audio Workstation. Although having stated that, there are certain programs that can act as a "wrapper" which can host plug ins, but obviously that is how HXN has been designed.

I was guessing that, because you have a PreSonus AudioBox interface, you must have already had access to some digital recording application. If not, don't worry because there a stacks of free DAW starter applications out there for both Mac and PCs. For example you could grab a download of the evaluation copy of Reaper which gives you a fully functioning trial version for 60 days. The trouble with that is then you could be trying to understand using the DAW and your HXNative demo period runs out.

Also you would need some method of listening to what is recorded in the DAW, so some form of monitoring is essential. You really don't stand a chance of being able to evaluate Native without decent a playback system. I get the impression that this is like looking down the wrong end of a telescope. If you are unfamiliar with digital audio recording, then you will be on a very long learning curve. Having failed to be impressed by digital modeling in the past, I reckon this would not float your boat.

I would suggest that you get a deal on buying a hardware Helix that has a return policy if you are not happy with the unit. With any hardware version of Helix – Rack, Floor, Stomp, you can simply hook them up to a powered FRFR speaker and you are up and running. Certainly a lot easier to transport than heavy amps and cabs, (and certainly easier than wrestling a Hammond organ up and down three flights of stairs.)

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks,"again".This definitely does make sense,i would be getting to deep into a hole I may not be able to get out of,i hadn't realised Native had to be part of a recording software set up.

I guess I will have to do a sale or return deal(don't like the idea, but),I actually do have access to a really good playback system in the form of a "DEQX"controlled 3 way Hi-Fi system, which can play back at high levels, but I would want the playback to be Guitar suitable stage gear.

I wonder if you mind me asking a simple basic question about HX stomp that i'm trying to figure out as we "speak" ,which is does Stomp only allow playback of a Single Amp & not Dual Amps as is the case for the full Helix units

Cheers & thanks for your help & time.

Hi,

First, to answer your question about the HX Stomp. The unit contains the exact same models of amps, cabs and FX that the full Helix and LT versions come with, the difference with the Stomp is that it contains only one Digital Signal Processor and the big boys have 2 DSP. This limits the Stomp only in respect of how much it can handle at one time, but it can still be your entire guitar rig in one box. Stomp has a limit of 6 simultaneously usable blocks whereas Helix has 8 per path along 4 paths for a total of 32 blocks. So yes even though it is a smaller box of tricks it is possible to run Dual Amp configurations, but you need to plan how to use it best. The fact that it uses "Snapshots" means you can do some slick stuff. Oh, yeah, it even has USB to connect to your computer to edit the presets and/or create your own and can be used as an audio interface to a DAW for recording. Couple on of these to a FRFR powered speaker and away you go.

In less than 6 minutes this guy can explain things better than me and you can hear the HX Stomp box in action. It's the mutts nuts and you don't suffer back pain carry this!

Hope this helps.
