fuzz off blanket on

For some reason when I put a fuzz block in the signal chain and turn it off, it sounds like a blanket is thrown over the amp. I have to reset the patch to get the sound of the amp to be normal again. If I save the amp with a fuzz in the signal path in bypass the patch is ruined i.e. it permanently sounds like the blanket is on and I have to rebuild the patch.

Any ideas?

You're welcome.  I'm still learning (and always will be) so I read a lot on here and there was a lot of good recent discussion around fuzz, instruments, pedals, bypass and true bypass, and input impedance and how some things work one way, but some thinks act differently.  More than one discussion.  I'm still taking it in or I'd speak to it in response.

If the fuzz is the first pedal in the chain (like it usually is), it may set the input impedance to a low value. When on "auto", the input impedance is set by the first block in the chain, whether it is active or bypassed. The vast majority of blocks sets the impedance to 1 MOhm, but a few blocks (and notably a few fuzz blocks) set it to a lower value. This will indeed make your tone darker if the fuzz is off. You can verify whether this is the problem by putting another (bypassed) block before the fuzz and see if the tone changes.
