anarchyrecoil
Hi all, On a lark I wanted to try to use my new Empress Zoia pedal to send midi CC to some other hardware. So far, I've tried to send a CC to modulate the treadle position on my Whammy IV and also tried send a sequence to a Roland SPD-SX to play a drum pattern. Both work fine if go directly to the hardware, but if I send the midi to the Helix and try to use (5 pin) midi thru, all I get is a jittery mess. There is definitely midi going through, but it's garbled. The Helix also starts to behave a little oddly; buttons not responding weird page changes intermittently. Has anyone else encountered this? kduck
I don't own a Zoia, so I can't comment specifically on that unit (looks cool though!). Is each piece of hardware on its own midi channel?
codamedia
MIDI 101.... each device should have a dedicated midi channel and OMNI mode (on any device that offers it) should be turned off. I suspect each device is currently on defaults modes.... channel 1 and/or Omni mode (which listens to all channels). That means everything is listening to everything... which creates the chaos you are encountering. Defaults are quick and dirty to make sure sure stuff is working... but when you start adding devices you need to give them their own space (channel) to communicate.
anarchyrecoil
I suppose I should have mentioned it in the first post, each device is on a separate channel. Helix -> Ch 3 SPD-SX -> Ch 10 Whammy -> Ch 11 Zoia -> Ch 13
anarchyrecoil
Sorry, I've narrowed the problem down to my midi splitter box, the Quadra Thru, from Midi Solutions as the source of this jittering.

Glad you figured it out. I've used the Quadra Thru for a while on my pedal board and never noticed any issues like that, but I haven't used the quadra thru with Helix yet. Curious about how you have your midi signal routed?
anarchyrecoil
Wasn't the Quadra either! There's a midi thru setting on the Zoia that was causing a midi feedback loop. Helix had midi in from Zoia Helix was going out to Quadra Thru which fed Zoia, Whammy and SPD-SX

The dreaded loop.... the MIDI equivalent to audio feedback. Glad you got things sorted out.
