coachz
Can I please get a simple list that tells me which legacy effects are stereo or mono please? All I see in the manual is this. Legacy effects models vary in behavior: Legacy Distortion, Dynamics & Pitch/Synth effects are mono Legacy Modulation & Delay effects vary in that some are mono, some stereo, and some mono-in/stereo-out, where adjusting the effect’s Mix parameter can narrow the stereo image that is fed into them Legacy Filter and Reverb effects are stereo

Legacy Distortion, Dynamics & Pitch/Synth effects are mono = MONO Legacy Filter and Reverb effects are stereo = STEREO Oh, yeah - then there are these. Legacy Modulation & Delay effects vary in that some are mono, some stereo, and some mono-in/stereo-out, where adjusting the effect’s Mix parameter can narrow the stereo image that is fed into them. Well, that is confusing to the point of what happens when you actually put one of these blocks into the signal flow, and checking what comes out of the other end. Possible one of three options, would be my guess. Surely, if you write down the result of the test you will have the concise information and the list you are looking for. I was really hoping that someone else would have written this reply for me, but dammit - no, I had to do it myself. Oh, I just checked the date - it isn’t April 1st. Wow!
coachz
Since I have the stomp connected to my Reaper DAW I'll just put a stereo analyzer on and see which ones are mono and which ones are not. It would have been nice though if there was an icon for legacy effects to indicate it

If you need a particular effect and want less DSP stress, then use a legacy block and in the midst of battle most people would not know the difference. Most anything that you would normally place in your signal path before an amp, should be mono, and after the amp stereo. Essentially what is quoted in the manual. Anything else is basically a question of using your ears. The majority of the legacy effects have had new Helix versions created that are far higher quality. Granted there are quite few legacy blocks that have not crossed over, as of the current date, but who know what v3.15 firmware holds that department. Admittedly, before the Legacy category of items were added to the Helix I would hook up my old POD HD500 to my Helix, simply to be able to use the Dimensions block. Now that is one item I would like to see benefit from a reworking to the new model standard. I would not hold my breath hoping that Line 6 coders decide to create new icons for stuff they seem to regard as museum pieces.
coachz
Thanks for the great replies. I really like the Dimension and Tri Chorus Legacy fx. The upgraded Stereo Trinity Chorus is great too.
coachz
After going through each Legacy effect I now know which are stereo and which are not. Some are simply Mono while others take Mono and make Stereo. I hope this helps others. You can test yourself with the attached preset. Just bypass the delay to test mono and enable it to test stereo and give a quick thwack to the guitar and mute it. Look at a goniometer and you can easily see what's mono and stereo. Ah, you see, now you have created a resource which could be very helpful to some other Helix product users - or even users of the older M units from where the Legacy effects were derived. Didn't take very long either - well done.

coachz
Since these legacy fx have such a diverse range of routing it would be useful to have an indicator next to them in HX Edit such as one of these lines or images. craiganderton
That's great info! If you don't mind, I'll include your findings in version 1.2 of the Helix book, with appropriate credit of course. This also makes me think I need to cover Legacy effects in general, since the first two versions concentrated on the non-legacy effects. I also like your idea of the routing symbols, that makes a lot of sense.

I've been following you for decades and remember so many of your articles including one that I thought was just so amazing. It was called "Things that keep you from making music" . Ring a bell?
