boynigel
Trying to find out if the effects pedal jack on the 5150 is wired as "short to sleeve". if it isn't, it can damage the amp and/or the helix according to L6. reached out to manufacturer but thought i might get an answer quicker here. Schmalle
That amp can be switched with MIDI. No problem.

No problem. a friend just bought the amp in question. he's considering a Helix (for effects), and i'm bringing mine up to his place to show him what it can do. i use mine for effects only, and to control my Suhr PT15. I was just thinking that if he has the right jack, i'll be pretty much plug and play when i go up to his place. i know him all to well, and he won't want to get into midi. total technophobe...not that midi is technical, but it is to him i guess. As it is, he's even on the fence about using Helix via TRS in place of the EVH's factory foot switch but i'm thinking if i can demo it as i use it w/my Suhr, he might see the light. Schmalle
Using MIDI for controlling that amp is easy and described in the amp's manual. You don't even need to set it up on the Helix if you switch amp channels with presets. And with Snapshots the Command Center isn't hard to set up either. You / he can ask here if questions arise.
DarthHollis
The amp channel and FX switching on the 5150 III series is kind of proprietary. It's not simple like most amps. RJM makes a few products that would help but I would highly recommend using MIDI. Midi really is much easier once you program the 5150. I used the Helix with my 5150 III 50 watt for years.
