kevinm213
After 7 years of not playing guitar, I'm excited to get back to playing and I bought a Helix and a Stomp XL recently. However, I found out with Custom Tones that there's hardly any patches and/or tones for covers like there used to be for all line 8 products? Now, if I want a cover tone, I have to pay for something I used to obtain for free with my Firehawk. I don't have the time to sit down and try to setup a preset with my ear to play a cover, I'm not a pro. And between my full time job and reserves I don't have that kind of time. If anyone can provide me with a learning curve or any advice it would be greatly appreciated. BTW, calling Line 6 has been total agony. Cheers! PaulTBaker
In my experience, the tones from Custom Tones or even that you can buy are very hit or miss (mostly miss). I know you said you don't have time, but make time and build your own. You really will be glad you did. Jason Sadites, John Nathon Cordy, and Steve Sterlacci are really good at explaining how to get a good tone. Jason was the first I looked at and is very good and VERY in depth. Maybe too much sometimes imo. However, he has a nice basic template that you could start from and then tweak to make it yours. Cordy is great mainly because I love the way he plays guitar, so very smooth. His patches are very smooth as well. Steve will show you some great tips and tweaks to use.... and they all keep posting new things as they learn and as new Helix stuff comes out. Good luck with your journey.... it really is worth the work!
Paul81Harris
Hello! The free cover tone landscape for Helix and Stomp XL isn't as abundant as it was for older Line 6 products. While CustomTone might have some, explore the built-in presets, YouTube tutorials (often with step-by-step guides), and online communities for user-shared tones. Focus on learning by starting simple with amp/cab models, adding effects incrementally, and tweaking Toll By Plate existing presets. Don't aim for perfect replication immediately; "close enough" can be great. Unfortunately, Line 6 support can be challenging, so community resources are often more helpful.
