Analg Delay Time Limitations

Hi, just purchased the HX stomp and testing everything. So far so good, and it seems to be doing everything I need with a bit of troubleshooting.

However, one significant issue at the moment is, I use a lot of synced delays. But the analog delays options all max out on delay time very quickly. I understand why; they're modelled on the original units, but it's a digital unit so why limit it? Boss units allow for this!

I'd love a delay with that BBD filtered quality, or a tape delay with saturation that can do 1/2d etc but I don't see any. Is that the way it is? It's quite a serious limitation for me!

Am I missing something? Thanks

You're not missing anything. The delay time limits are what they are. You can submit a feature request using the Line 6 Product Feedback link on the line6.com home page.

Hi,

If the analog delay you're referring to is the Bucket Brigade model, then that was based on the BOSS® DM-2 and the original version of that had delay times of 20-300ms. The Helix version has the identical delay times.

If you would like to try the "Ben Adrian" modified version of the DM-2 with delay times that range from 20ms - 1.8sec, you should load up the Adriatic Delay block.

If this is still a "serious limitation", for you, then you HX Stomp has a Send/Return function which would allow you to add an external Waza Craft DM-2W.

Lots of info about the various models can be found here:

Hope this helps/makes sense.

Thanks, I will submit it to Line 6 but I imagine this far down the line they won't be adding it (and it might mess with legacy settings). I was suprised to see it!

Ah I missed the Adriatic version, yes it seems to work!

Also the transistor tape has nice long delay times for a tape emulation. I'm finding the space echo (Cosmos) note divisions don't behave as expected? Something to do with the tape heads?

Anyway, I think I can work with this - thanks!

I must say it's a very intuitive unit and very well implemented software. I tried the Boss GT1000 Core and it was a nightmare. This was a breeze and I got instant results (probably helps I had an M9 before).

Hi,

Well, in the real world back when I was young and the Space Echo first arrived in the mid 1970s, it did seem to have been created by some form of alien intelligence, and it was a real beast of a thing to try to control. Very unpredictable, and prone to drift off on it’s own accord whenever it felt like it. It made life interesting.

Regarding the tape heads and note division, you have to remember the delay time you set is actually tied to head 3, with heads 1 & 2 working as subdivisions, ie thirds of to main time. For example if you set a max delay of 900ms, that is what happens on head 3 and subsequently the time of head 2 is going to be 600ms, along with head 1 at 300ms. The same thing applies when using note divisions. Also, the various combination of playback heads tend to create different patterns. Ultimately, it’s all mathematics.

Before buying my first rack mounted DDL in the early 80s (Ibanez DM1000 still in my rack), I used my old Simms - Watts Echo Dek, (Google it) - 3 tape heads with a seemingly endless spool of tape in a circular cassette from Sony. Oh, what fun and games with that thing, many happy hours of cleaning and de-magnetising tape heads. It’s a lot easier now.

Hope this helps/makes sense.
