M13-compatible Expression Pedals

I was wondering which expression pedals out there are confirmed to work with the M13. Obviously, the Line 6 EX-1 is at the top of the list but I find the price on them a little steep for what it is. Has anyone personally used any other expression pedals and can vouch for their compatibility?
Thanks!
Here is a list that was created in the old forum and should be accurate up to the end of that forum... Obviously it doesn't include EPs that came out since and I'm sure there are some that are missing from the list. It's also a shame that no one put the entire thread here on the new forum...
Works:
Ernie Ball VP Jr 25k ohm (log pot)
Line 6 EX-1
Roland EV-5
Boss FV-500L
Boss FV-500H
unknow needs confirmation:
Kurzweil CC-1 (10K linear pot, 45 bucks, likely compatible)
TC Electronics X1 (25k ohm Logpot, $130 (!), likely compatible)
Pigtronix EP-1 Expression Pedal (20k pot unknown taper, metal construction, around 50 bucks, likely compatible)
Not Compatible:
Yamaha FC-7
Ernie Ball VP JR Passive 250K & 6166
Any wah wah pedal
Morley volume Pedals
Behringer FCV100
M-Audio EXP
Rocktron Hex
Moog EP-2 (it is possible to swap the internal pot with a 16mm pot, though it might take some fabrication skills. This is not recommended for the inexperienced.)
Hope this helps!
Please note: I cannot take any responsability for any discrepencies on this list. I did not write it and I did not test any of the components on it (except the Ernie Ball VP JR 25k ohm, wich does work) ![]()
Thanks Koz! Exactly the info I was looking for...
Found this on another thread http://mission-engineering.com list the EP-L6 pedal as for line 6 products
thanks I really appreciate this list you made
going to grab one right now
Hi.
(first, please excuse me if me english is bad, especially when I'll try to use "technical" terms)
I bought a M-audio ex-p to use with my m13, mainly because the guy at the store assured me it would work properly and... well it doesn't.
BUT, before returning it I opened it to see if there was trick, just in case.
There is one, and I know it's cheap (40$ top?) and made out of plastic, but YOU CAN MAKE THE M-AUDIO EX-P COMPATIBLE WITH THE M13!
What they did is put a 1kOhm resistance just after the main potentiometer... and It prevents you from using it with the M9/M13, in the sense that you won't be able to get the 0 or the maximum setting with your pedal, depending on witch polarity you set (the little M-audio/Other switch on the bottom of the pedal)
All you need to do is grab a sloding iron, take this little crap out and connect the two points (i used solder but a small electrical wire would probably look cleaner).
AND THAT'S IT!
I'm not asking for the M-audio pedal to be added to the "compatible" list, but just take that into account if you want to save wome money.
Will the Boss Fv-50h work as well?
Hope you saw that I wrote: Boss Fv-50h. Not 500
Kosmic:
What does "log pot" mean on the Ernie Ball VP Jr 25k ohm? Is this a special version of the pedal or a setting (like the taper switch on my larger EBVP)?
thx
The Ernie Ball VP JR 25K is what I use. Just search for model number 6181. Very solid pedal. Works great.
+1 on the ernie ball vp junior. I've been using one for a year with no problems at all
For those who are using the Ernie Ball volume pedal for expression pedal.....how does it work as a wah?
I am used to the rocker motion of the crybaby/vox style and fear it may not be very natural as a wah.
thoughts?
I picked up an Ernie Ball yesterday..as a wah my first impressions are...it feels like a volume pedal. It's got a string it uses to smoothly turn the pot so it's great for smooth volume swells.
that is what I suspected. I have an older EB VP (the larger one) that I use for volume pedal and love it. I cannot try it as wah, but I noticed that even EB changed the design (shortened the throw) on their EB Wah offering.
Makes me lean toward the Mission.....
Ken
We designed the Mission pedals primarily to give a feel similar to a Cry baby wah, and still to function as a expression pedal for other effects such as volume swells and pitch based effects. It has a very slightly longer movement that an actual Cry Baby but less than an Ernie Ball.
the other link didn't do it for me for some reason
http://www.mission-engineering.com/Mission-Engineering/Mission_Engineering.html
I hear ya, it's just not a good feel for a wah with the EB, I'm open to still looking. But I'll keep the EB for vol/exp pedal #2.
Does the Erine Ball 6181 with the 25K pot work with the X3Live?
Thanks,
Dan
oops, didn't see your post
yes it works
I'm still trying to decide on which expression pedal to get. I'd love to get a line 6 pedal if they had a decent one but the reviews for thiers is terrible.
has anyone tried the dunlop volume pedal? or the mission stuff?
I guess I'm leaning towards the ernie ball but I just want to get the best one for me.

I have had a Roland EV-5 for about 15 years. I originally got it for my old Boss ME-8, but I have been using it with my XTL/X3L in more recent years. It works and feels fine. Despite being made of plastic, I think it is pretty durable.
Since buying the M13, I decided to get a second pedal and picked up the Line 6 EV-1. I know there are some bad reviews on MF about this pedal but let me say that it so close to the Roland EV-5 that I am sure it is made by the same mfg somewhere along the way. The dimension are identical. The feel is identical. There is clearly some basic mold/chassis that is probably used by several pedals and these two share most of the same characteristics.
The grip has a slightly different pattern. There are different logos, the Roland EV-5 has a knob on the side. The Line 6 EV-1 does not, but it has the exact same mold where the knob would be.
Anyway, the Line 6 pedal is fine. It feels and works identically to the Roland EV-5. It is also about $30 cheaper. I think the Roland pedal is more versatile for other applications, but if your only intent is to use it with the M13, save the money and buy the Line 6 version.
On the other hand, if you need something in a metal chassis so it can withstand maximum abuse, then the Ernie Ball may be your way to go. I also have an EB VP Junior and while it is a very rugged, the whole mechnism is controlled by a piece of string. While the chassis of the EB may last longer, I have more faith in the Line 6 pedal as it isn't completely dependant on an exposed string that could easily be damaged. That said, I have never had a problem with my EB pedal either so this is pure conjecture.
Just my 2 cents as an owner of several pedals in question...
Hi guys,
I just got an used Ernie Ball Vp Jr 25K, but it doesn't work properly... It never changes the fx the same as before. An example, Pitch Glide: if I set Heel 0 and Toe +12 , if I change fast it goes from 0 to +5, if I change very slowly, it gose fine: what is the problem?!
Tnx a lot!
Radio
I just got the mission engineering pedal for my M13 and it works like a dream.
So does the analog pedal have a fast response? I've been using the Midi expression pedal on my Behringer FCB1010 and it's too laggy to use for wah or pitch glide.

Yes, the response is pretty much instantaneous in my experience.
lag in midi expression pedal is easy to fix. When you go fast the pedal has to send out every 16th number, when you slow it has to send out every number. There must be a setting in the Behringer that addresses that... speed? scaling? something like that.
Anyone knows how good the mission egineering is?
You can check out reviews of some of the other Mission pedals at www.fractalaudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=9986. There are reviews coming up in some of the guitar magazines in Nov/Dec too.

I have two of their EP-1 pedals for use with my Ground Control Pro and Axe-Fx. Good quality, nice and sturdy, no silly string-n-pulley mechanisms like the Ernie Ball pedals. And the best part is that the pot is the right inverse log taper for an expression pedal. Not volume taper.
Might buy the Line6 version for the M13 if I find I need expression capability in the future.
I have the L6 Mission Engineering pedal. Totally worth it, great build quality and can use it with the M13 or the shortboard.
Coul anyone tell me which pedals are analog and digital??
The analogs have faster response? the EX-1 (line 6) is analog???
Does the Daphon Guitar Volume Control Pedal - 2 Channels work properly? It is cheaper than the others!
And what about the Bespeco Bsvm12l ?
just got my m13 couple of hours ago. so im really new to this. I would like to ask if i could use fv500 H to control my volume and when stepped, be used as a expression pedal?pls help me before i buy a BOSS FV500 . what should I use, FV500 H or L? some suggested H, and others L. "H" has 3 jacks. input output and exp. "L" has 5 jacks, 2 inputs, 2 outputs and 1 exp. thank you so much for your help.
I just picked up my new M-Audio Exp and it works perfect with my Line 6 M9.
(I didn't have to modify it as someone wrote earlier)
The list above states that the M audio EXP won't work...yet yours works?
If your willing to pay U$89.00 for a rocktron. Buy the Ernie Ball. Tested and aproved!
And as you can see on post. Doesn't work
Does anyone have pics of the MOD done to the M Audio pedal?
That would be GREAT HELP!
M Audio Pedal? Are you sure?
So I bought an M-Audio EX-P expression pedal mainly because there are NO EX-1 pedals in my area!!!
1st thing I n oticed was the inherent problem...would NOT fully sweep!!!
So I took it apart and attempted the MOD.
It's SIMPLE and works PERFECTLY!!!
Right after the 1st pot theres a tiny little board with a 1k resistor (TINY RESISTOR!!!) located at the top. I simply bridged that resistor by adding a wire between it's 2 points and WHALLAH!!! The pedal now works FLAWLESSLY!
I'm going to get another as I need 2 for my M13.... and total cost for TWO will be $60!!!
I am RELY GLAD I gave the EX-P and MOD a go!!!
PS- LUVIN' THE M13~~~!!!
After a few days with the M Audio EX-P it crapped out!
I guess you get what you pay for!
Bottom Line...I've owned the Line6 pedal and its actually pretty well built. The M Audio Pedal...JUNK.
LESSON LEARNED
Hi All!
Just FYI, I happened to already have a Proel GF14 Stereo Volume pedal.
I recently bought the M5 and decided to just try it out since I found that the Proel GF14 uses 2 x 10kohm linear pots.
Low and behold, it works!
Looked up the price new and it's going for SGD$50.00 which is believe is only USD$38.00.
I got it coz it looks to have better build quality than the M-Audio and the Line 6 EX-1.
Got this when my local distro didn't have stock of the EX-1 for months.
Works fine right out of the box and looks way cooler and is smaller than either of the abovementioned.
Have fun!
Old thread I know, but I tried the Ernie Ball 25K ohm pedal, and while it worked 95% of the time, there were times when the M13 didn't know it was there. Those times were pretty annoying. I switched to the Line 6 pedal and haven't had any issues.
i have the ernieball vp junior 6180 25kohms, it works only a half press from the heel but when i pressed all the way down to the toe then it's stops working. i did the calibration from -24 to +24 of the heel/toe pixel indicator but it doesn't work the way it should be. any help? thanks!!
I've bought the Roland EV-5, but it can't do the full sweep: it stops at 95% of the sweep.

In this video 2 others customers in the comments say that they have the same problem.
Is there any solution?
Anyone know if the Dunlop DVP1 is compatible?
Regarding the M-Audio EXP and it's compatibility with the M9, clipping the 1k resistor and replacing with wire or solder does fix the sweep issue on this pedal...just did it. It doesn't however alleviate the reverse sweep on the wah. You can set the sweep parameters each time pretty easily but the default sweep is reviersed for some reason until you manually set it in the wah effect. I assume this isn't the case with the pedals on the true compatibility list. --r

Be interested to know this myself. Anyone??
Hey guys ! Do you think this Expresion pedal could work ?

Just wanted to update ya guys who love the feel and response of an EB. While the 25k can work it still has an un-uniformed audio taper and because of it being 25k the last quarter of your sweep doesn't even do anything. Our line uses our custom designed 10k pots and while they work perfectly with Line 6, with a flip of the mode toggle you can use them in voltage control mode so it will be compatable with multiple other pedals. You can get more details at http://thru-tone.com and feel free to email with any questions at justin@thru-tone.com
Has anyone modified the Moog EP-2 to work with this?
If so, care to expand upon it a bit please?
Yeah I have,
replace the 250kB pot with a 10kB pot (I don't know why the original post says 16mm, that's the physical size of the pot), and change it to a rheostat instead of a voltage divider.
I even put in a stereopot, so I can use it with my M9 and other gear at the same time. ![]()
Does anyone know of the m13 can be compatible with an XY midi pad or kaoss pad?
Anybody seen or tested the new Electro Harmonix Next Step expression pedal with the M9/M13?
I am pretty sure that pedal wouldn't work. It needs a TRS cable to work in expression mode, and with a TS connection (what Line 6 uses) it acts as CV (control voltage) controller. Personally, I don't like the idea of using an expression pedal that requires a battery or an AC adapter.
I thought so too. Too bad. I kind of liked the concept of having no moving parts on an expression pedal.
Hey,
I just got my m-13 and have spent several hours on it so far and have only got a couple patches that I sort of like. Does this thing come with some basic factory patches? Eric Johnson sound, chorus, delay, dist, etc patches already set up? I'm not finding combinations that are sounding good to me. HELP! Somebody give me some patches or scenes....whatever they are called... I'm 64 and afraid I may die before I figure this thing out.....fusionkw
The M13 does come loaded with 12 factory scenes, but to be honest, none of them are really anything special. Since the M13 is purely an effects modeler and doesn't model amplifiers, it will only take you so far in imitating tones. But that's not to say it isn't really powerful. It is, but you kind of have to have some idea of what sorts of effects combinations you're looking for. If you have a particular artist's tone you're after, the best thing to do is to find out what they're using in terms of effects, and find the models on the M13 that best replicate that.
Another thing is that sharing scenes on the M13 isn't nearly as easy as with other Line 6 devices. Since everything is done via MIDI, it becomes a bit cumbersome to load scenes on the M13. It's not that it's too hard, it's just that to audition a bunch of them would take a while. I think you're better off coming up with your own scenes.
Thx for that....maybe I should be asking what are the combos of a good chorus, clean fat distortion, clean jazzy tone, the basic tones. What are some of the patches that some of you out there are using? The number values are what I'm after. Let's say from left to right 1,3,4,2 as an example. I also bought a Roland/Boss gt 100 which is really awesome! I love it and it has 200 factory patchs that I can program and they are just ready to go whenever I need them.
fusionkw
The Boss GT 100(I have the GT-10) is great for really nailing artists tones. The M13 ( which I also own) is for sounding like yourself. In front of a good or great tube amp I have found it to be much better than individual pedals.Never thought I would say that.I use it when I want to reflect my own personality instead of someone elses. When I have a high pressure covers gig and need to play-funk/blues/punk/classic rock/jazz standards etc...I use a POD HD 300 or Boss GT 10.Good Luck and Have Fun!!!
Since there have been some firmware updates, are there any expression pedals that work now that wouldnt before? Like maybe the m audio m-gear?
