Just finished a new track using the HD500X. This time I decided to try my Strat (Texas Special pick ups). The track has Strat and Les Paul parts. For the first Strat solos I used the Hiwatt amp. I set it as clean as possible and then “drove†it a bit with the Tube Compressor for the next solo. The Les Paul solo which follows was the JCM800. Back to the Hiwatt and then back to the JCM800. The middle Strat solo was also back to the Hiwatt and the final solo was the Strat on the JCM800 model. This song has the “busiest and fullest†mix so far that I’ve done with the HD500 and I think that the tones work well within the mix. It's also amazing that this was recorded straight into the desk. IMHO it doesn't sound like it. Hope you enjoy. I’m having a lot of fun with this unit. Cheers, Peter. https://soundcloud.com/peter-john-hanmer/the-long-road-home

Thanks for the comments, Crispy. Glad you enjoyed the track. I am busy with the next video and hope to finish it soon. Cheers.

Thanks Startle. Glad you liked it. Cheers Peter.

Thanks Linz The pick ups are the stock Gibson ones. 490 and 498. They are fairly medium output. Cheers.

It's virtually impossible to create a patch (especially a distorted one) that will sound good on just about every pa. There are just too many variables that come into play. The places where most pa's differ are in their mid range frequency reproduction. Unfortunately that's also where a guitar frequency lives. A sound guy should be aware of these things and be able to make changes by cutting or adding eq to correct these differences.

Thanks bjnette, I do agree with you regarding the limiting but it's a delicate balance between loud and loud with no dynamics at all. I try to stay within a certain loudness level and keep as much punch to a track as I can. I've had a lot of success with it which shows by the amount of mastering work that comes my way. If I had my way I'd back off on final limiting completely but if I did that, I'd have no clients. My final masters usually come out at around -10 to -11 dB's. A lot of final masters are being maximised to -6dB which is crazy. Glad you enjoyed the track though. Cheers, Peter.

Hi alienux, glad it works for you. If you use those patches as a starting point you can then tweak to customise your own tone. Cheers.

Lol! I'm glad you like it Gui, The Plexi has the tube distortion on it. The tube distortion has to be the most underated "pedal" in the HD500X. I love it. You just cannot get that amount of crunch from the Plexi without it. Cheers.

Thanks edstar1960. Glad you like them. Cheers.

Hi everyone, I've had an overwhelming response to my first video and the patches that I've created. I decided to put a track together made up from some of the riffs that I played in my first video. I also used a few of the amps and patches that were made available on my website. There will be more patches for download once the second part of the video is uploaded. I used the Les Paul for this track. In the meantime, the amps featured were: Plexi (all the backing gtrs) JCM800 (the first, second and last solo gtrs. A bit of stereo delay was added to these) Treadplate (3rd solo gtr. Stereo delay was added to this patch) Fender Twin (clean gtr straight) Fender Twin with delay and chorus. Hope you enjoy, Cheers, Peter. https://soundcloud.com/peter-john-hanmer/hd500x-crunchfest

Thanks, lpeacock1, yes, the Fender patch is on my website. Cheers.

Thanks, bjnette. Much appreciated. @stumblin man, I'd like to hear your feedback on the patches. Cheers, Peter.

Thanks guys. I am busy with the next video. It's gonna concentrate on creating two patches from scratch and a few tips on how to get the gtrs to fit into a mix. Stay tuned, Cheers, Peter.

Yes, obviously the PA that you are playing through must be fairly transparent. If not you'll have to re eq your patches. I've tried to set up my patches to be as accurate as possible on a system that is reproducing a flat as possible frequency response.

Thanks for your comments guys, @ChaserHUN, I monitor on a pair of Yamaha HS50Ms. @Gui, I'm glad that you're getting a good tone in your live gigs and that the patches helped. @gumby999 The patch will be on my website when I upload my next video. Cheers, Peter.

Wow!!! Thanks so much for your comments everyone. I'm really glad that everyone is interested in the video series. I've worked really hard to put this together. I'm also very happy that my patches are being used with success. I try and keep my settings and patches as simple as possible. I do find that by "loading" too many efx before and after the modelled amp the actual core of the tone is lost and in a mix or a live situation, the guitar gets completely lost in the mix. @alienux, the solo gtrs and backing gtrs are essentially the same except that on the solo gtr I've added a stereo delay. @baron55, yes, it is the Les Paul. The pickups in my Std are not that hot. They are slightly hotter than the vintage pick ups. @mastersonics, thanks for your comment. I'd really like to hear how your show goes with those patches. Cheers, Peter.

I've put these two patches together to demo the Plexi and the Treadplate amps in the HD500X. In Part 2 of my video series, I'll show how to build these two patches and also how to make them "sit in the mix". They should also work well in a live situation. The guitars were double tracked (Gibson Les Paul) just to show how big they can be coming from a modeller. Cheers, Peter. https://soundcloud.com/peter-john-hanmer/hd500x-tread https://soundcloud.com/peter-john-hanmer/hd500x-plex

Thanks for your comments, Mastersonics. Busy with the next one at the moment. Cheers.

I'm about to start the next one. Will keep you posted. Cheers, Peter.

@bjnette - Thanks for the comments. The POD was plugged into the mixing desk using the XLR outs from the unit. The eq on the desk was completely flat. The only eq, compression, reverb etc was from the POD itself. It was then sent to an M-Audio Delta 1010 soundcard and recorded in SONAR. That's it. @Palico - There are sooo many ways to configure this unit. The way that I did it works well for me but I'm pretty sure that it won't work like that for everybody. There are just too many "extra" factors that come into play. My patches could be looked at as a starting point though and then obviously one could tweak further to taste. I will constantly be updating my settings for patches though and will keep uploading for users to try out. I do want to show in my next video, a complete tutorial on creating a patch from scratch and then actually recording that tone into a complete track to show how to get it to sit in a mix situation. Thanks for your comments. Much appreciated, Cheers, Peter.

Thanks. It will be interesting to see what your results will sound like. I definitely think that there are a number of external factors that influence the tone. Cheers.

Hi everyone, I've just finished the first in a series of demo videos featuring the POD HD500X modeller. I've had the unit for about a month and have had the time to spend getting to know it a bit better. I hope to make a number of vids with tips etc that I'd like to share on the forum. Hope you enjoy. Cheers, Peter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWrRLPRh1A0&list=PLf5_zBpLSCU7uNeo1YFjaNPogbR5PcSK6

Ok, pick ups. They are the Gibson 490 and 498 pick ups. The gtr is stock.

I used a Les Paul. No mics as this was direct into the desk. I did put up a new thread with a link to the patch. This patch was used in the clip on this thread.
