I had the same issue updating my helix to 2.11. I followed the instructions exactly and got the update failed error with messed up helix screen. Ultimately, booting helux to update mode (switches 6 + 12), unplugging all other usb devices except my mouse and installing in local mode worked for me. I suspect my USB wifi was hanging up the helix update somehow. Hope this helps someone else.
