Now it's a month! Seems like either Line6 isn't putting forth the resources to keep current customers (who have bought into the Variax and the PodHD line) satisfied, or if they are putting forth the resources, this issue is turning out to be a real pain to fix. Sure! Its nice to go ahead and release the upgrade for all the Variax players who don't use a Pod, but I'd think that we who have been loyal to both would be at least an equal priority. I've owned an XTL, an X3L, 2 HD500s and now I'm looking toward an HD500X and a couple of L3Ms to go with my JTV69, so no, I don't think I'm expecting too much if I'm a little impatient for this problem to be solved. I hope we don't find out that there is a hardware limitation that was overlooked, and is a deal breaker. Does anyone know if this limitation is inherent in the HD500X? I'll definitely not order an HD500X until I know that I can connect my JTV through it to workbench, and that there are no limitations to the functionality of workbench, edit, or the usb recording interface since I use the HD500 extensively with my DAW.

I thought about replacing the usb interface, but they're not listed in the L6 Website store, and the more I think about it, if I can't make adjustments along the whole chain from guitar model to amp model to effects etc., I'd just as soon wait until the offering is complete. If I played through a standard amp I would definitely go for another usb interface, but then again, if I played through a standard amp, I never would have sold the one that came with the guitar. ;-) I was just hoping an L6 rep would speak up and say when the problem would be solved. Thanks!

Oh yeah, I totally agree, which is why I'm feeling left out. I've never had any issue with the updates, and I think that the differences are mostly subjective, and more about what the individual ears are expecting. Besides I love to tweak, and don't at all mind touching up my patches to dial in the new sounds. I am more than a little disappointed that I can't connect through my HD500. I just hope that someone is devoted to clearing this particular issue, since it is rather foundational. Thanks!

Gotta admit that I'm feeling a bit left out. I sold my USB interface with the Variax 700 that I sold recently, thinking that I would always have the HD500 available for that purpose. I use the VDI Cable exclusively, and I don't really see going through the hassle of making a tweak in Workbench HD and then having to switch back to the VDI to see how my changes would react with the model I'm playing through. Not being able to have everything connected and playing while making adjustments to guitars and models makes my dream rig..... well ..... less than dreamy. Not only that, but I've found it quite usefull to tweak the string volume set up after every string change along with the standard intonation check that I do. I don't recall a way to adjust string volume set up outside of Workbench. Considering all the problems that I'm seeing folks have on the boards with the new 2.0 update, maybe I'm lucky that this is holding me off, but I would like to have some idea of when the bug (that is keeping us from using our VDI Cable connection to our PODs to connect with Workbench HD) will be squashed. Days? Weeks? Quarters?

I did sell my usb interface with the Vax 700 I recently sold, thinking that I would never need it since I have an HD500. Jeffgtr60 stated that the old Workbench would still connect and work, but he's on Mac OS. Is this a safe assumption for a PC OS as well. I adjust my string volumes every time I change strings. I want to do the update, but if the bug fix for connecting to workbench through my HD 500 takes as long to present as this HD update did, that could make it several string changes away. Should I wait???? :(

Anyone Using Guitar Synth With Variax?
flabergaster replied to MWolfkiel's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I'm running a Variax JTV69, an HD500, and GR55. I have posted quite a bit about it. If you search for my user name you'll find a good amount of info. I love this setup. It truly is the dream rig, with ice cream. ;-) I hope I'm never w/out it. -
Variax 700 Tremolo - Roland Ready
flabergaster replied to flabergaster's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
Yeah I saw that, but we'll see. The sale JTV89s aren't the model with the trem either. I've seen several of the Variax 700 series going for around $600 and the Roland Kit is $249 from Sweetwater. That's what I'm basing my starting price of $800 plus $50 shipping on. I'm an electronics tech by trade, and I'm very good with my hands and tools. After doing several of the Roland Kits I can tell you that not just anyone will be willing to tackle the install, and It would cost you another several hundred to get a luthier to install it for you. This is a great guitar with upgrades, extras and I don't need to sell it, so I'm not giving it away. I'm fine with keeping it as a back up to my JTV69 with the Roland Kit, but I'm fine with someone else getting some good use out of it as well. I appreciate your comment. If you know anyone who's looking to marry the Line 6 and Roland technology please pass this on to them. I can't imagine more fun for a guitar player than having all these sounds at my hands and feet. Live long and prosper! \\//, -
I just listed this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/171070743020?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 Since I installed a kit on my JTV69 I've barely played this one at all. Some one should get some use out of it.

Good work! I've been thinking of ways such as yours to use this live, but I'm mostly recording at the momemt. I love it when a piece of gear is flexible enough to let you fool around outside of the box like the HD500 does. Have fun!

I have two Variaxes, both outfitted with GK-Kit-GT3 Internal synth driver pickups. My 3rd guitar is an Explorer Kit that I built with it's standard Mag Humbuckers and also a Roland internal kit on it as well. I have a Line6 Pod HD500 & a Roland GR55. The GR55 has two 1/4 inch outs designated as left and right, and then a 1/4 mono output for the output of whatever guitar's magnetic p/u feed that travels down the 13 pin cable from the guitar. I'm using both the Pod and GR for guitar tones, and can mix and match any combination. The PCM or Synth sounds and guitar tones are mixed with the GR guitar tones at the outputs of the GR and sent through to the FX Loop L/R Returns. The Magnetic P/Us from the Explorer travel down the 13 pin GK cable and are sent out the "Guitar Out" of the GR and sent to the "Guitar In" of the POD. When run this way I can record any or all of the above to my Laptop running Reaper through the USB to the Line6 driver for the HD500. I use two cords on my Variaxes (VDI and 13 Pin Roland), and just the 13 pin on the Explorer. I prefer the Pods Guitar sounds for the most part, but there are some things the GR does well, like a modeled classical guitar. Here's a link to a diagram for those that are more visually stimulated. ;-) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/18573291/PodGRDiagram.jpg

Well I am so pleased that it works just as I thought it would. All I did was route the L/R outputs of my GR55 to the L/R effects returns. I then put the FX Loop(which I have never used until now) as the last effect in the signal chain. As soon as I backed the Mix down from 100%, BAM! there was the sound from my GR55 in full stereo with nothing plugged into the HD500 send. I'm leaving the mix set at 50% which seems to work, and I modified my most used patches to add the FX Loop at the end of the chain. I have the volume pedal in the block just prior which lets me isolate either source by just working the two volume pedals. I tested a quick recording and the sound from the GR55 now makes it through to the driver and records into my DAW just fine. What a tool! Now I can get just about any sound imaginable from my guitar to recording. I'm very impressed with the HD as a recording interface. I've had no pops or gliches, and the sound quality in and out is top notch. It's like my "Dream Rig" for recording and playing live. Thanks Line 6! .................. and Roland!

I am using my HD500 as an input device recording to Reaper. I have a Roland GR55 that I want to integrate into this set up for additional guitar and synth tones. When playing live I route the headphone out from the GR55 to the CD in of the HD500 which works great. I have found that the CD input does not route to the driver for recording to my DAW. I know that I could just use the guitar and aux ins and build patches expressly to pass through the GR55 tones, but of course I want it all, which means playing my JTV, dual amped, with the GR55 sounds overlayed in stereo and recorded to a stereo track in my DAW. I have read in the manual that by using the mix control in the effects loop I can have pre loop sound mixed with the loop return sound. I understand this as a wet/dry mix control for the effects loop. Could be wrong though. Question: If I patch the L/R 1/4" out of my GR55 to the L/R return of my HD500 with no cord (or cord to nowhere) plugged into the effects send jack of the HD500. Will I be able to record/mix in the synth sounds and have it go through the interface to Reaper for recording? Has anyone tried this, and what were the results, positive or negative. I plan to try it this weekend, but I figured I'd throw it out there to see if anyone has already traveled this road. If I don't get any responses, I'll post my results later. Thanks in advance. Mark
