Basic question: why do some presets have sound and others don't?

I'm a complete rookie using a multi effects box and can't figure out why some presets produce sound and then when I scroll to another one it doesn't have output. I'm assuming there's a switch or parameter that I've accidentally turned off/down but can't figure it out. Can someone please enlighten me on this very basic issue? Thanks!!!

Thanks for your advic, but I'm still not sure I get it. I thought I could just scroll through the different presets and hear how each one sounds when I first tried it out. Now only a couple produce sound and most do not. Are you saying I have to go into each one change the input and/or turn the volume up? Seems hard to imagine that I accidentally turned off so many of them.thanks for your help this is driving me crazy!

Not sure what presets you are listening to but one of the factory presets contains a bunch of presets that are designed for vocals or a mic'd acoustic guitar. Those have their input set to Mic, not Guitar, so you won't hear anything from your guitar.

Also, many presets use a Vol FX controlled by the pedal. Make sure that the pedal is not in the heel (miniimimum) position.
