wolfetho
Hi, I was wondering if anyone has tried using an OD pedal like Timmons w/ the Helix as the front-end and no speakers from an amp. How were your results? I live in an apartment, and I'm looking for ways to get a good sound without blasting out my neighbors. I was also going to try using IR's for added realism. Thanks, Tom
ricksteruk
I'm using my Helix a lot in 4cm with my Hughes & Kettner switchblade combo. I am getting all or most of my distortion or drive tones from the H&K valve preamp, which then feeds through a Helix Cab sim block and into headphones. It sounds fantastic and I can really rock out at 2am without bothering anyone. I do use the Helix overdrives sometimes in front of a clean real amp and it sounds good to me. I've not tried a real OD pedal in front of Helix yet.. and as I want to keep my rig as small as possible I probably won't even bother trying! The Helix OD pedals work well enough for me. :)
DarrellM5
Just in case you aren't aware, they added a Timmy model to Helix recently. I'm not sure what "front-end and no speakers from an amp means" though.
wolfetho
Hello Gear Head. Thanks for letting me know that they've recently included a"Timmy" OD in the Helix. I wasn't aware of this. What I meant by "front-end w/ no speakers is I'm not using the Helix with an amp. I've been using it just as as an effects processor for recording direct into my Apollo Interface and into Digital Performer my DAW. I know it will probably sound better with an amp (and speakers), but I'm hoping I can still get a great sound straight into my DAW.
DarrellM5
Ok, got it now. It will work great that way. I run it straight into Reaper some times. You can go into your Apollo or just straight into your computer using the USB cable, since Helix has 8 in / 8 out USB channels.

Pacohelix
Hey on my Timmons patch I use the cali rec amp and a light marshall. I run those in stereo and have switches to change the gain stages. Andy uses a lone star and stiletto. he uses other stuff like the bb preamp and carl martin compressor. I believe he runs stereo delay too. If you set your patch like that you will get extremely close to his sound. I can somehow get you my patch if you want
