JTV59 nut depth

Recommended Posts

I was just watching a youtube video where the tech suggested that on the 3 low strings,  about 1/3 of the string diameter should stick up above the nut ( in other words, string not buried in the nut slot ).   Do you agree with that?   My 59 is 3 weeks old and the 11 - 49s I'm using don't stick out at all.

That's fine for a Les Paul and if it's a bone nut. This is not a Les Paul.

In the end, it's more to do with the breaking angle to the tuning post.

The string eye on the tuning post, the breaking angle from the post to the nut,

the string height above the fret board and how that all fits with the rest of the set-up

between the nut and the bridge. That's what matters.

In the end, there is no one size fits all.

If you want to take advice from a tech, read Dan Erlewine.

He literally writes books on this stuff.

I have the relief and action close to most specs and where I'm happy with it --- except for some fret rattle on the low E in the 5th-9th fret area.   All I know to do now is take it to an expert and see if I'm missing something or if the brand new frets need a little dressing.
