roscoe5
First off, apologies to Line 6 for not trying ALL of the mics when I was judging the Helix cabs. I assumed that the 112 Dynamic (AKG D112), traditionally a bass drum and bass cab mic, only applied to the bass cabs, but you know what they say about assuming...I admittedly ignored this mic in my cab trials for this reason. Looks like I'm late to the D112 party. For those of you not digging the Helix Cabs for high gain, try the 112 Dynamic mic on them. Most of what I didn't like about Helix cabs went away when I put this mic on. The nasally blanket came off. A dual cab setup with the D112 on one cab and any other mic on the other sounds really good too. I'd like to know if Line 6 created separate IR's of each cab with each mic, or if the different mic type responses (and distances) are digitally overlaid on neutral cab responses. This is a shortcut that would certainly cut the physical work down for them. Hopefully it's not the "hybrid" part of their cab modelling making them consume less processing resources. This may be the reason many prefer 3rd party IR's with a continuous end-to-end impulse response for each cab/mic/position/distance configuration. I couldn't tell you if this is how the AKG D112 really sounds on a real guitar cab, but I'm about to find out. I have an AKG D112 and fully plan on IR'ing my Recto 212 with it soon after this revelation.

Might not hear it often enough but your posts and efforts are much appreciated...not to mention entertaining from these seats. :) Sure its all up to the individual, but i wont be surprised if youre not a fan ot the D112 recto sound. There probably couldnt be a bigger mismatch for a cab mic combination.. Recto already has plenty of low end and is mid scooped. the D112 will add bass and scoop mids, and that will really only compound the issue. Some of the reason that this is a "poor" choice is because at mixdown you are often looking to strip the guitar of certain lows. The D112 would be a good choice on something lacking bass and carrying lots of mids. That really only leaves the top end and there are much better choices than a D112 for guitar. I know you are just having fun experimenting, and i prob havent told you anything you dont already know, but maybe it'll help someone else....and then i just love hearing myself talk so theres always that  ........peace
roscoe5
Ha, that was a nice "you know nothing John Snow" ;) Indeed I'm busted...long time musician that never miced his own guitar cab beyond an SM57 straight on. But thanks to getting back to the digital realm recenty with Helix and Amplitube 4, I'm finally inspired, researching, and experimenting with mics. You are right about the lows on that IR. I have to use the low cut to 80hz in Helix, as well as the high cut to about 10kHz But I love everything else about it. It adds some liw end balls and high mid bite for high gain sounds that was lacking in other dynamic mics. Its a great IR to mix with other mics (condenser, ribbon). Redwirez MixIR really has my interest now if it really let's me audition two IRs and mix them down to a single IR for Helix using less processing. Although I will say even a mixed dual Helix cab with a D112 on it is sounding pretty good to me right now too. Too bad on the Helix dual cabs, it's split stereo. I can't seem to find a way to make it a mixed mono signal.
