A Question on FW Update and import of patches

I may be a bit odd in the way I do things, but I'm wondering how this will affect my update procedures.

 

First, I keep all my patches stored on my computer's hard drive and I only load them when I build sets for a show.  To be perfectly clear, I don't keep any presets permanently loaded on the Helix.  I load them as I need them.

 

So here's the question:  I intend to not have any of my presets on the Helix when I do the update.  Once I finish the reset my intent is to go ahead and load the presets I'll need for that week's performance from the disk as I normally would.  How will those presets get rebuilt?  As I load them?  I really don't want to load in all my presets (70+) just to do the reset, and get them rebuilt.

 

Bottom line, what are my options here?

I guess my advice would be to import all the presets you need, and then once you do that, power cycle. If any of them actually need rebuilt, the Helix should do it automatically when it boots up again.

That sounds like a very reasonable thing to do in my case.  I may have to do that each week for a while until I work my way through all the presets, but it's a lot better than loading them all up.  Thanks a bunch!!

This is not directed to anyone on this topic as they are experienced users but I thought the eminently accurate verbiage they used in the posts here brought up a point worth emphasizing. For anyone new to the Helix who has been following these posts about doing a power cycle after loading presets from a prior firmware version please be aware that what is being recommended is just turning the Helix off and then back on again so that the presets rebuild after a load. The recommended action is a 'power cycle' NOT a global reset. A global reset will delete any presets and IRs you have loaded as well as resetting all of of your Global settings. You do NOT need to do a global reset after loading old presets although you should absolutely do a global reset immediately following a firmware update (make sure you have backups of your presets and IRs first!). My apologies if I made what will undoubtedly be an obvious point to experienced users but I did not want to be responsible for people new to the Helix going through unnecessary contortions or accidentally wiping their presets out.

Wow, interesting! I think that's where I screwed up, although I could swear I did the same thing when I updated from 1.06 (I think) to 2.00 without any issues. And this time around, I didn't lose ALL of my presets, but I lost the majority of them. Like I said on another thread, next time there's a new firmware, I'm going to ask a lot of questions (stupid or not) and proceed with extreme caution.

Yep, the proper update order so far is: Backup(twice for redundancy) --> Install latest version of Helix app (Updater, Driver, Editor) --> Firmware Update --> Global Reset --> Restore Backups --> Power Cycle (turn Helix off and on).  

 

Rule of thumb right now is you are probably safest not editing your restored backups until you are no longer seeing the rebuild messages upon bootup. After this standard upgrade process has been performed you will always want to do a 'power cycle' any time you load backups from a prior firmware version so they have a chance to go through the rebuild process (which you can see on your screen during the bootup). Even if you load prior version backups months after doing the upgrade process do yourself a favor and reboot (power cycle) at least once before editing them.
