EvilPhish
Luckily I happen to live in a very special part of Alabama that has no options for high-speed internet service (long story about a lying real-estate agent and a telco that doesn't care to run cable). I'd like to update my Helix. There doesn't seem to be any way for me to do so, short of bringing my Helix to the public library, setting it up and doing the update. Is there seriously no way to download the firmware on its own and then update the Helix when I get home???
rvroberts
Well, you need to install the latest updated, editor and firmware, but as far as I can see, there's nothing to stop you downloading all that onto your laptop ( or even a USB stick, and doing it all in the comfort of your own home. What gives you the idea you can't?
rvroberts
That was iPad correcting for me.....updater, editor and firmware.
EvilPhish
The editer and updater aren't the issue. Without an active internet connection my updater doesn't DO anything. Perhaps I'm doing it wrong, but if so I can't for the life of me figure out what.

Perhaps I'm doing it wrong, but if so I can't for the life of me figure out what. When you say the Updater does not do anything does that mean that when you fire it up it is not showing the Helix and the firmware version along with the graphic in the initial Updater screen? If that is the case it usually means that the Windows driver either has not been installed, did not install properly or you are having problems with the USB connection to the Helix. Make sure you install the 'Helix' app first which will install the Editor, Updater, and the critical driver. If you already did that and the Updater is still not seeing the Helix I recommend uninstalling the Helix software and reinstalling it. If the Updater is still not seeing the Helix you should try every available USB port on your computer or even another computer. Once the Updater is communicating properly you will see your Helix and current firmware version on the initial screen. Clicking on that will allow you to either download the firmware from Line6 or to point to the firmware file on your local machine (which sounds like the best way for you to go). Note: You probably already know this (but in the interest of being thorough as you are attempting a manual upgrade) the 'Helix' app file which has the Editor, Updater, and driver is a separate file from the firmware which is titled 'Flash Memory' on the L6 Downloads site. You will need both files ('Helix', 'Flash Memory') to do a local/manual firmware upgrade.
EvilPhish
haha I was all prepared to get snippy about the 'it'll start downloading' but in the early part of your reply and then I got to the bottom you gave me the information (that I'm assuming, as I can't check at the moment) that I needed. I did NOT know about the 'flash memory' section of the support site, it never occurred to me to use that search string and everything I tried came up with nothing relevant. I also didn't see the option to point the updater to a local file either, but I really didn't give it much of a try, as I hadn't located the firmware file in the first place. ;) (I'm on a Mac, I assume the functionality is the same as on Windows.) Thanks a ton for the help! It seems like such a meaningless little issue, but believe me, when you accidentally buy a house in an internet 'dead zone' you start to become very aware of how many manufacturers assume everyone has access 24/7. Anyway, I've just arrived here from Axe-FX XL land and I'm still getting used to the new software and interface (omg I'm still giddy over setting patches on the hardware itself) so I appreciate the info. Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas! Cool, hope it helps. The 'Flash Memory' file should be right below the 'Helix' file in the L6 download section if you sorted on 'Helix' and your OS version. Once you get the Updater talking to the Helix you should be able to point to your local copy of the 'Flash Memory' file and execute the firmware update. Make sure you get the same version of the firmware ('Flash Memory') file that matches the version of the 'Helix' app you downloaded. The latest one is 2.11 and you want to make sure that is the version for both files.
silverhead
To get the firmware, go to the Downloads page. Select Helix in the Products (left) field, select Flash Memory in the Software (middle) filed, and select your OS in the right field if it isn't already automatically selected. Hit GO. On the next page you will find the Get Download button at the bottom of the v2.11 information window.

Yep, download the two files on to a stick, then you can install them from there when you get back to the woods. I feel you about the internet. I was stuck with a crappy internet connection in the back woods of Arkansas for a while.
