charrison_2000
Hi All: I want to use an Amp Head with the Helix, and use the effects in the Helix in the Amp Head effects loop, and then use the cab IR in the Helix, like so: Guitar into Helix Helix Send1 into Front of Amp Head Helix Return 1 from Amp Head Effects loop SEND Helix Send 2 into Amp Head Effects RETURN Helix Return 2 from Amp Head Output (Speaker Out) Any problem using the amp head this way (without load box)? I wouldn't need a 1/4" 'speaker cable' back into the Helix from the Amp Head's output, just a regular 1/4", correct?
jbuhajla
You will need a load box. Never send a signal from an amp speaker out to the Helix. You will release the magic smoke from your Helix if you do.
charrison_2000
Perfect, thanks for the response. I do have a Behringer Direct Box, would that work between the Amp Head Out and the Helix? https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GI100
mkornell
No, a standard DI box will not work. You need a load box - something designed to take all the power coming from an amp head and strip it down into a line level signal. HonestOpinion
There is a big difference between an FX Send on a guitar amp which is a line level signal (or in that ballpark) coming from your guitar amp's preamp section, and the "Speaker Out" which is coming from the power amp section and should never be plugged into an effect or modeling unit. You want to use the FX Send from your amp to the Helix loop's Return. The amp's "Speaker Out" is only designed to go to an internal speaker or external speaker cabinet which can handle the high level output from the power amp as well as provide the proper load (e.g. generally 4-16ohms depending) to keep your amp from frying. Any time you want to run a combo amp or head without a speaker you need to use a load box or you can fry your amp. The load box, similar to a speaker or speaker cabinet, provides the necessary resistance to the power amp section of your amp to prevent it from pushing too hard and overheating and causing damage. Many load boxes in addition to the output that goes to the speaker, also have a direct output which steps the signal down to a line level signal suitable for running directly to a PA or if you choose, to an effect or modeling device. Some amps also include a direct out on the back which can be used this way.
