Split outputs?

I want to run XLR out direct to mixer, and 1/4" out to FX return of my stage amp for live performance. I have been making patches with full amp/cab/mic models on 1 side, and pre only/no cab on the other to accomplish this. I can't have dual amps or stereo (though I don't think I need stereo, anyway). Is there another way? POD HD500X, by the way

for whatever reason you want an amp on stage when running a modeler, that is your business.

but why do you think you need to separate path?

You have the house getting the direct sound. Good.

Anything else is just your own personal monitoring station. Does it really need to have the same exact tone.

It needs to sound decent. The best solution would be a FRFR cabinet, but I don't have the budget. The amp on stage is to match the bass and provide that 'real live' feel. The Helix can do it (and so can my old pedal, Digitech GNX3000), it just seems like a weird missing feature.

Your setup is already a decent way to do this. Their are two things to watch for....

  1. Make sure you pan the paths LEFT/RIGHT accordingly and use the correct outs for the correct locations
  2. Make sure you plug a dummy plug into the unused 1/4" output otherwise both sides will SUM to the one you are using. This does not happen with the XLR outs, just the 1/4" outs.

If the amp models are nothing special and you are generating most of your tone from the effects prior.... you can do away with the "pre-amp model" and just plug that side directly into the front of your amp. That will give you full volume/tone control on stage without the need to bend over and edit the HD. This is all dependent on how you are using it.

Thanks for the dummy plug tip, good to know. I really want to take advantage of the dual amp capability of the 500x, for switching as well as tone crafting. I could try using a full model patch and run it through the amp FX return. Maybe it won't sound like total garbage? A FRFR cabinet is the real goal, just looking for a way to have the best of both worlds with my current equipment.

I'm not sure what you use for an amp... or whether or not this is an option... but why not put a full range coax speaker in your amp?

I put an Eminence Beta 12LTA into my old Peavey Bandit and plug into the power amp input of that amp. It's not a true FRFR, but it does give me full range and balances my stage tone better with my direct FOH tone (eg: I can use the same tones).

Admittedly, that is not my primary setup... usually I just use the stage monitors (or "in ears") with my own mix. But when I do need some stage re-enforcement, my little pseudo FRFR gets the job done nicely and cost me next to nothing.
