You won't be able to do four cable method with the amp. There has to be an FX send/return or a Preamp Out/Poweramp In. Lots of "modeling" amps skip this feature because they include several FX already and it saves them a few bucks. Line 6 didn't bother with FX loops on the new Spider V amps, either. I still think that's because they didn't want anyone buying it to use as amplification for the Helix series since they're selling PowerCab and FireHawk amps for that purpose (at 2x the price, of course).

What GPM said. To use Helix with the K50 you're limited to using the 1/4" Out (set to Instrument level) to the amp input. You'll be using the HXFX like a traditional front of amp pedalboard.

You can get some of the advantages of 4cm by using the Katana's time based effects (delay, reverb), and use the HXFX for everything you'd normally put in front of the amp.

Based on your choices, I assume you're a metalhead. Can't go wrong with either of those for tone.

However, both of those amps have complex footswitching that the HXFX likely can't handle, and as far as I can tell, neither uses MIDI.

Unless you're planning on buying an additional midi to analog amp switching device (not cheap, adds complexity), I'd look for an amp that uses MIDI for channel/preset switching.

Not a true metalhead myself, so depends on your personal definition and budget.

Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister (several models, VERY MIDI), Marshall JVM410, EVH5150III all come to mind. Here's a link to a discussion on TGP:
