Helix bricked mid-update

So, I was in the process of updating from firmware 2.7.whatever to the new version 3. Backup file failed multiple times, of course, proceeded with the update. Update crashed halfway through, Helix now has no firmware, won't boot, wont connect to HX Edit, factory reset does nothing. I have tried multiple computers, multiple usb cables, multiple usb ports both on the front panel and mobo itself, nothing. I'm now stuck in Update mode, with no way to do anything. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi,

You haven’t said what your computer and Operating System are, but let’s try this.

First go to the "DOWNLOADS" menu at the top of this page and from  "-ALL HARDWARE-" select Helix, then leave the "-ALL SOFTWARE-" as it is, now select your PC/Mac OS from under the "-ALL OS-" tab, then click “GO”.  From the next page you can select HX Edit 3.00 for your Helix, then below that you will also need the Firmware 3.01 Flash Memory. Now scroll right the way down the page where you will find Line 6 Updater version 1.9.

Download all these items to your computer and note where they are.

Ensure that HX Edit is closed and that you have your Helix connected to your PC by USB cable (do not use a hub, some front USB ports on PCs act like a hub, so use one of the ports on the back) and hold down Foot Switches 6&12  while turning the power on. This will put your Helix into “Safe Boot” mode and you may see a black, or error screen, but keep going.

Now, launch the Updater Utility that you downloaded and select "Offline Mode". Your Helix and current firmware version should now show up in the window, click on the dark green coloured band and you should now have the option to select a  local file - point it at the Flash Memory file you downloaded and let it get on with the update.

When it completes you can install the new HX Edit v.3.0 software and you should be good to go.

No guarantees are given or implied, you do this at your own risk. If it doesn’t work, raise a ticket with Customer Support.

Hope this helps/makes sense

IMO.... Start with this step before trying to run any installers. Installing HX Edit 3 also installs the latest drivers which are important.

OP may also need to start the Helix in "update mode" (hold buttons MODE and TAP during start up for helix floor/LT) prior to running the installer.

Hi,

Could be worth a shot - nothing to lose - best to try as many options as possible.

The main reason I suggested the safe boot routine was the OP said that he had been in the process of updating from v.2.7.when this happened. IIRC there seemed to be a lot of failed updates at around mid point of the install to v2.8 and beyond, because the Core was changed which seemed to cause lots of "update bricked my Helix" complaints when they got stuck at 50%. Also the OP had said that HX Edit failed to connect to the Helix, which is why I thought that the "local install" of the firmware might be a better option.

Anyhow, if none our suggestions work, it will mean a return too base to have a technician look inside the box.

;-)

I fully agree with your upgrade approach...

The reason I suggest installing HX Edit 3 prior isn't to try an update from HX Edit, but to make sure the latest drivers are installed. Sorry I wasn't clear about that.
