Helix Native working fine one day, now crashing Cubase & Reaper

Hello!

I've been using Helix Native for well over a year and had few problems with it outside of its initial authorization system (yuck) and have otherwise been loving it. However, today its suddenly decided to not work at all out of the complete blue, crash any project it is in to the point Reaper refuses to even let me load it, all Cubase projects I used it on no longer load properly until I blacklisted the plugin in a blank project. I've diagnosed everything and Helix is the only software/plugin causing problems

I'm on Windows 10, Cubase Pro 11.0.20 and Reaper 6 (whatever the latest version is)

Helix Native has been a workhorse for me so I use it in every project, now every project is broken. I've tried re-installing with no success, even with the potential to lose all the presets I've made.. I guess that's why there's a save to disk option! Eesh. Attached a picture of the error Cubase gives me for each instance of Helix native in a project, meaning some projects blast me with like 20 of them.

The fact that Helix Native has the potential to completely ruin a day of productivity has me looking at other options.. even if I'd rather not since I prefer everything about Helix Native it sound and workflow wise, but the potential to just break randomly in a professional setting like this is unacceptable!

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Kind regards

Matt

Hi Matt,

I have never encountered anything like that happen. In fact HX Native is very stable running in Logic on my Mac. I also have Reaper, Studio One, GarageBand, Tracktion, among others for testing purposes, and Native seems to function as expected in those. I haven’t used Cubase since way back on the Atari 1040 ST, so I’m unable to test this for you.

For HXN to simply stop working in both DAWs is extremely odd. In situations like this, my first thought is - “what else has/might have changed since the last time it was opened?” There are so many variations of Windows 10 around, it may be something in the OS has changed or inadvertently been modified.

This should be reported to Line 6 Customer Services ASAP - raise a ticket through your account to make them aware of this. It also may be advisable to check with Steinberg Tech Support directly, or any Cubase user group to see if there are any other reports of this happening.

The message is asking you to contact Steinberg Technical support.

I assume that this error points the problem to Cubase.

I have no knowledge on Cubase as I use Reaper.

Try loading the backup file that reaper created just before the problem occurred.  If it works, then Save As a different projects name in the same folder as the existing project.

Now close reaper and restart Reaper again.  If that works, then just delete the old, problematic project file.  Do not delete any other files.

The other thing I would try:

Delete the VST VST3 for Helix Native. It's a .DLL  file. Then re install Helix Native and see if that works.

Check to see that all your audio and video drivers are updated and that Windows has not installed other ones that conflicts with your audio interface.

Hope this helps.

Hello guys thank you very much for your replies!

So over the last several days, I was still investigating what it could be as the day after... it was working absolutely fine again. So like datacommando said I naturally went about wondering what had changed as there was nothing on the software side of things that had changed in those few days.

Then it hit me... on my searches for solutions before I posted this thread I came across a single post somewhere that just said something mentioning "the SD crash"

I had been doing some filming and transferring data using an SD card in between the days of getting this problem so I tested and yup - whenever an SD card is inserted completely breaks Helix Native!.. No idea how, or why. I'd left the SD card in when it initially stopped working. Doesn't matter what DAW, I even booted up the old FL Studio and the crash happened across all 3 Cubase Reaper and FL

A very strange and interesting problem but at least I know what it is and can avoid it at all costs now. Reminds me how on an old computer plugging in a hard drive in a certain port for some mystical reason broke all audio performance.

Thank you for the suggestions and help!

Kind regards

Matt

Hi,

Glad you figured out what the issue was.

There are several threads in the main Helix channel that specifically mention this problem of the SD Card.

Hope this may help someone else in future.
