Hi guys! Happy Wednesday. Im thinking about getting a line 6 go and have heard that there are communities of really talented dudes and dudettes who create sounds to replicate their favourite songs/artists and share them with the less talented (me) to use. Is this the case?

I hope everyone is safe and well.

Well, there are tons of patches to try on Line 6 Custom Tone and various Facebook and forums share patches too.

But if you think any of these patches will magically make you sound like your guitar heroes I'm afraid you're in for a rude reality awakening.

Patches will sound very different through all the very different gear we all have...headphones, computer/ studio speakers, amps, cabs, guitars, pickups etc. And we all have different ears too!

Best advice I can give you before buying is to carefully read the manual and watch the videos on how to use Pod Go, and about patch building and you really need to learn about the different amp, cab and mic models, what the fx parameters do, effects chains, output levels, EQ and so on. And you'll need to understand about DSP limits and that certain amp and fx will use up a lot of your available DSP allowance that could limit your choices of what you can and can't have in a patch.

Pod Go is an excellent MFX...but it is NOT plug n play. There is a LOT to learn!!  And you should carefully evaluate your needs before buying any MFX. Every unit has its pros and cons, so this means there is no such thing as what is the best MFX...only what is the best for you. Marketing blurb will tell you what these units can do, but just as important is what they can't do and forums and FB groups can be very enlightening here.

And NEVER buy something in the hope that it might get a feature, amp or fx model later. Make your decision based on what units do or don't do now, or you'll leave yourself open for disappointment. If you want a polypitch feature, touch screen  built in DSP info, multirouting, 2 amps or 2 cabs at once, or other high DSP fx in Helix that won't come to Pod Go, then you need a different MFX product.

A Kemper will actually record a tone, and then allows you to play it back.

That is what Kemper does. That is what they are designed to do.

Therefore, their tone repository is a little bit better in terms of "I uploaded a tone for Song X" - because you know it is an accurate (within reason) recording of Song X.

But Line 6 isn't in the recording/playback business.

And that forces me to twist knobs to create a tone (much the same as I would physical amps). So, there does come some 'interpretation' involved when creating a tone.
