HX Stomp Volume Sweep Uneven

Hi all,

I recently setup my Moog EP-3 with my HX Stomp, connected via a TRS cable. It all works absolutely fine, polarity correct, goes from 0 to 100 etc but the sweep is just a bit uneven on the volume block - there's a noticeable jump from 0 volume to 30/40%. Logarithmic is a lot smoother than linear but still has this same 'problem'.

When comparing side by side volume block + expression pedal against just a volume pedal into the HX stomp it becomes really noticeable.

I usually get a really smooth sweep from the Moog EP-3 with other pedals, so is a slightly uneven sweep normal for the HX Stomp, or is it something that would be better with a different expression pedal, e.g. the Mission Engineering, Line 6 EX-1 etc?

Thanks in advance!

I have the Mission SP1-L6. When I first got it I connected it using an unshielded "insert" type cable. It acted really crazy, jumping around, wouldn't go to 100%, just weird, I mean, the pedal is MADE to use with L6 devices, right?

I replaced that cable with a pair of better quality shielded cables connected to a TRS to dual mono adapter. Works perfectly.

Try different (better quality, shielded, shorter?) cables.

The stomp wont accept a TRS exp pedal without doing weird things. The TRS it's expecting two separate circuits, that you can set in the globals as exp pedals or footswitches. The dedicated Mission SP1-L6H has a TRS cable because the pedal has a toe footswitch, so its two circuits.

Just wondering how are you actually connecting that TRS from the pedal, to the TRS on the Stomp...could be you are hitting 100% way before the end of the pot travel.

Thanks Pier - sorry if I'm being naive, but I'm not quite sure what you mean by how I'm connecting the TRS cable? It's just a standard TRS cable on both ends, connected from the Moog EP-3 to the expression input of the Helix.

I understand your point about HX Stomp requiring a TS cable or TRS for two circuits, but quite a few people seem to use the Dunlop DVP4 Mini X with the Stomp connected via a TRS cable (which does not have a foot switch) and seem to have no issues.

After doing a bit more research, is it possible that the issue may lie with the potentiometers, in that the Moog EP-3 has a 100k pot and the HX Stomp requires a 10k pot?

I believe it's a mix of both, pot value much higher than required, and the way the HX Stomp is sensing control voltage from that TRS, instead the expected TS. That EXP on the back is actually two TS ports (one feeding back to sleeve, and the other to the ring), not a single TRS pedal port. Not even sure how's possible you get it working without the 0/100/0 issue, but yeah, isnt really a ideal setup.

Anyway, your pedal has nothing wrong. Is L6 that went completely out of standards with exp pedals.

You could easily mod it with a different pot and wiring TS, but this would make it not compatible with other pedals.
