HELIX LT - Freeze

Hello.

I just got my Helix last week and I'm liking it very much. But. It just so happens that I already have problems with it.

Earlier I was editing through HX Edit and the software closed. I said I'll just restart and get over it because it is windows being windows. I soon found out that windows was not the problem.

The Helix LT is actually frozen. There is sound coming out the headphones but none of the switches or buttons do anything. It is genuinely completely frozen. I have obviously turned it off, unplugged it from the wall, waited about 30 seconds and then restarted it. No state change whatsoever.

HX Edit loads slowly and after it eventually connects, my presets are not loading and I get the following error:

"Failed to load preset.

Timeout waiting response from device (code -8212)"

Did anyone else have this problem? I really need this to work for my upcoming gigs.

Thank you!

Sounds like it could be a USB connectivity issue. Try other USB ports on your computer, and avoid using any usb hubs - even internal ones. On a desktop that generally means using a USB port on the rear panel of the computer, not the front panel where there's often an internal hub behind it.

Hello silverhead. Thank you for the input. I am using a laptop for HX Edit and am not using any type of hub or auxiliary USB. It's straight on the motherboard.

I have made a global setting reset using the switches on the LT unit and it unfreeze. The unit is working now without the issues I had earlier.

Despite this, I would actually like to know if this is a common problem and what may be the cause. I find it strange for the unit to still be frozen even after disconnecting the unit from the power source and restarting it.

Cheers.

Since it’s a new unit I would make sure the firmware and the HX Edit program are fully updated to version 3.15. Sometimes issues like yours result from the editor and the firmware being different numeric versions.

Hi,

Rule #1 of Helix club is:

When weird and unexpected stuff happens - try a factory reset - and if that doesn’t clear the bug, try a reinstall of the latest firmware.

Reset Options

Helix Floor/LT

Button Combination

Description

2

LED light Fun

3 & 4

Test Mode

5 & 6

Global reset

7 & 8

Reset setlists to factory, Keep IRs

8 & 9

Reset setlists to factory, Clear IRs

9 & 10

Reset setlists to factory, Global reset, Clear IRs

10 & 11

Upgrades existing presets to latest format

11 & 12

Clear current preset

5 & 12

Clear setlists, clear IRs, Return system settings to default

6 & 12

Safe boot mode

To use Reset Options:

  • Power off the Helix
  • Hold the desired button combination
  • Power on the Helix
  • Release the button combination

Please note: Buttons are numbered from top left to bottom right.

Hope this helps/makes sense.

I have had this problem with a total freeze, no buttons or controls on the floor unit have any effect, and attempting to use HX Edit resulted in what the OP has described.

After many power off/on cycles, there was no change (it was worth a try).

What I have just done, is sacrificed a preset - I restarted the unit with buttons 11 & 12 held down, "Clear current preset".

The preset was erased, and I was able to use buttons, knobs etc again.

(Note: I had used this preset before without issues. I don't think the preset was the problem. But I sacrificed it in an attempt to un-freeze the unit. My "freeze" happened when I was navigating through presets using the "PRESET" knob.)

Was this a "permanent fix"? I don't know yet. Hopefully it doesn't freeze up again. About to find out this weekend.

.. UPDATE: After about 5 hours of playing time, still no issues, except for missing the one patch that I "sacrificed" during the "Clear current preset" restart.
