TONEX - Anyone played with it yet?

Never a big fan of Amplitube here (I'm more of an HXN, S-Gear, and Neural DSP fan), but has anyone tried IK Multimedia's TONEX? The online demos and youtube reviews are intriguing. Yeah, its more of a direct competitor for Helix Native, but an especially interesting solution for touring musicians that want to model and replicate a favorite amp/cab setup. The concept of building an online library of user-captured devices (stomp boxes as well as amps/cabs) is also interesting. I'll grab the free demo when I get a chance...

I’ve had AmpliTube for many years, but never use it since buying the Helix. Strangely enough, one thing I did like about it was the ability to move mics around in a similar way to the 3.50 Cab update firmware.

I had some emails from them prior to the release of Tonex with some examples - I never bothered to follow up on any of it really. Having said that, one guy that I definitely know has played around with it is Jason Sadites - seems he has created a few files for Tonex. Start here:

Hope this helps/makes sense.

Here's Mr. Cordy playing a TONEX capture of a Dumble previously owned by Joe Bonamassa. IMO this sounds as much as the real deal as it gets (and yeah, sure, what Cordy plays always sounds great, but I tried to not care about that aspect too much). I've been playing through some Dumble clones myself already (never owned one, though, but it was my plan to save some money for a Fuchs - then modeling reared its ugly head) and have a sweet spot for players like Ford and Carlton, so I'd consider myself being rather familiar with these kinda tones. And I can't say I heard much better Dumble tones anywhere (even if some Kemper profiles of Michael Britt and some of Fractal's Dumble models sound great). Anyway, I guess all I'm saying is that the TONEX capturing seems to work extremely well - which is what pretty much everybody else says, too.

Great endorsements, huh? Both of those youtubers have good ears for shaping tones. Cordy's riffing was killer. After I finish my Black Friday plug-in shopping (I had to set a limit for myself!), I'll grab the free version to check out. TONEX is an intriguing concept; to be able to download and play through gear that was captured by others, or to capture stuff you own.

I ordered an Axe I/O with AT5 Max and Tonex Max from them at the end of last week. I'm pretty excited to match my Koch Powertone II and see how it stacks up. I almost bought the Tonex Capture too but I already have a Torpedo Captor X and Axe I/O covers the reamp out. I actually wanted the AI/O to cover the pickup loading that's missing from the hardware using Helix Native. I thought it'd be interesting to try. Anyone have any mic recommendations? I currently have a Sennheiser E906.

Just give it a try. You might however also want to create a capture without the speaker. All you need to do is to connect the speaker out to a DI box (make sure to connect the "Thru" out to the speaker) and grab the XLR out. You could then use all sorts of IRs on that capture.
