Using HX native in parallel with a HX stomp

Hi,

 

I'm contemplating getting HX native. I'd like to be able to play around with tones in a DAW and then transfer settings back to my stomp for live use.

 

I'm thinking to record an extra unprocessed signal from the stomp by using a send block right at the start of my chain going into my audio interface. What I can't get my head round is if I boost the signal on my audio interface preamp (which I'd usually do when gain staging any other input) before hitting the DAW amp sim, won't the amp sim behave differently to the one in the HX stomp?

 

What's the best way to approach this so that the amp sim in my DAW receives the same input as the block in my stomp?

Use the HX Stomp and its ASIO driver as your audio interface rather than using a Send block to a different interface. You can record the DI dry signal over USB5. The signal is tapped directly off the Guitar Input on your Stomp so is, in fact, exactly the signal your Stomp is processing. So using the same preset in Helix Native should yield exactly the same result. See the manual for the section on recording.

 

If you must use a different audio interface then, yes, you may have a leveling issue in order to have the HX Stomp and the Helix Native preset sound identical. You’ll need to experiment because it will depend on your equipment. I would start with adjusting the level of the Send block in your HX stomp. Be aware of a couple of things:

 

1. The incoming signal level to your dry track should be significantly lower than the level you are used to seeing coming in to your DAW. The processing of the HX Stomp preset, especially the amp sim, increases the output level.

 

2. The signal from the Send block in your HX stomp preset will necessarily be different than the signal at the Guitar Input of your HX Stomp because it will have gone through an A/D and D/A conversion before hitting your audio interface. 
 

Both of these concerns are eliminated when you use the HX Stomp as your interface.

The advice given in the post above from @silverhead about using your HX Stomp as the USB audio interface is possibly the best way for getting both the processed dry signal into your DAW. At the very least it is the simplest method.

 

The other big thing to bear in mind when using HX Native to create presets that you can transfer back into the Stomp is, you will need to use Preset Compatibility Mode in Native. As Native uses your computer to the process the signal, it is not restricted in the complexity of the path it can create: - i.e. it can create a preset that exceeds the DSP in your hardware. Once you have created a compatible preset in Native you can easily save it to your HX native library or drag and drop it to your desktop and load it into HX Edit to transfer it to your Stomp ready for use in your live set.
