2x12 PC vs Powerstage volume

I need to get into a 2x12 that is loud enough for playing some rock gigs or practicing with a band. I'm curious if the powercab is worth it, or if doing something like a normal 2x12 of some kind and a powerstage 170 (or bigger?) would get enough volume. I know that sound options would be limited without a powercab, but I ain't a huge tone head, I'm sure there's enough tone shaping in the helix to make good sounds. I'm just not sure what I would require for enough volume.

Depends whether you want 'simple', plug in, turn up and go, or to spend a bit of time tweaking and fine tuning...

I own both versions of the Powercab Plus and they can both get f***ing loud, BUT there's some faffing around to be done to get the best from them.

Alternatively, you could buy a good 'ole, high wattage power amp of some description and an appropriate 2x12 cab. and away you go.

No guarantees one will sound better than the other - "the tone is in there, you just gotta know how to get it out".

Thanks, I guess maybe that's the meat of my question, like the 2x12 powercab is 500 watt solid state, seems like it would be plenty loud. But I'm not sure how a 170 watt powerstage performs, especially when plugged into a cab with a rating of like 120 watt. I'm used to using a 50 watt tube head and a 4x12 and getting plenty of volume but I'm wanting to downsize a bit nowadays and I'm not sure how all the digital and solid state stuff relates.
