SyntheticSocks
I have some gigs coming up where I'm playing in a duo. The other guy is playing bass and a drumpad through a Boss RC-505 looper. This is all going right to FOH. We'll have floor monitors. Since his signal is going straight to FOH, do I need to use my FRFR on stage? I would have left main out to FOH and right to FRFR. What should my volume knob be set to? I've seen some people say 6, but I've seen others say 10. Anything else I should be aware of settings wise? I've been searching this forum and reddit and finding a lot of contradicting info. Just want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row before the shows. rd2rk
Are the floor monitors yours or provided by the house? If you KNOW that the monitors are good then no need for the FRFR. I'd bring it anyway as backup. In order to prevent accidental changes, I disable the BIG KNOB in Global Settings by setting it to control something other than the outputs I'm using for FOH. That effectively sets it to 10. That way FOH gets a consistent signal, no surprises. If you're using your FRFR for stage level in addition to the floor monitors and you use the BIG KNOB to control the signal to your FRFR that will also change the level to FOH. Find another way to control its level - a volume pedal or small mixer or? FOH will thank you.
SyntheticSocks
Floor monitors are provided by the venues. Perfect, thank you so much for the concise answer. I've seen the trick with setting the big knob to be your frfr control only, seems like the way to go. Do you think having the Frfr onstage might be too much since I'm getting everything else from the monitor? I don't have to combat with a drum set or anything. Thanks again! That's not what I said, though I can see where it might be confusing. If you want to use the BIG KNOB to control your FRFR, then you'll need to take the FRFR signal from the Main Left/MONO Out with the Global setting for the BIG KNOB set to that output (XLR or 1/4"), then use a SEND at the end of your signal chain with a TS cable (like a guitar cable) from that SEND connected to a DI box for FOH (to get a balanced signal for the longer cable run). Same affect, FOH gets a consistent signal and you get control of the FRFR volume with the BIG KNOB. You're probably OK without the FRFR, but bring it anyway, even if you leave it in the car, because you never know with house supplied monitors and a FOH tech who might be the bartender or the waitress's cousin Freddy whose day job is as a salesman at Guitar Center. We know how knowledgeable they are!
DunedinDragon
Quite frankly you're making this way more complicated than it needs to be. We've been doing what you're describing for a few years now with the bass player and myself going direct to the mixing board and depending entirely on the floor monitors for our stage sound. He goes direct from his DI box, I go direct from my Helix L/mono out. Both instruments plus our vocals and backing tracks are sent directly to the mixer and fed back to us via the stage monitors. That is a completely separate thing than where I set my BIG KNOB volume. I disable my Helix main volume knob which sends my full signal from the Helix to the mixing board at Mic level. I control the volume levels of each of my presets by adjusting the amp model channel volume and/or main output block volume in each preset so my signal is at a consistent level on all presets going to the mixing board and is comparable to all other inputs (bass, vocals, backing track) on the mixing board and is gain staged in a normal fashion with all other inputs and mixed appropriately for the front speakers and the monitor speakers. The last thing you want to be doing is depending on a setting of the Helix main volume knob which can get bumped and moved around during the performance.
