Sending Tone 1 and Tone 2 into Reaper

I've got four good sounding presets on my POD X3, and now I would like to hear how two of them would sound together. So how would I record Tone 1 to one track and Tone 2 to another track in Reaper? If that can be done?

Use your X3 as the audio interface, connected to your computer via usb, and configure Reaper to use it and its ASIO driver as the input/output device. Arm two stereo tracks for recording in Reaper. Specify the Record Input in Reaper to USB 3/4 for one track (Tone 1) and USB5/6 for the other track (Tone 2).

Well it appears that I successfully got both tones recorded on different tracks. But the problem is if I listen to both tracks at the same time, it appears an audio glitch shows itself.

When listening to both tracks at the same time, there are a few spots that it sounds like the balance is shifting. Kind of like someone is monkeying around with the balance control when I'm listening to the playback.

Don't know what is causing that. I posted a question on the Reaper forum too.

I disabled the FX on both tracks and the playback sounds fine. When I enable the FX again, I hear that balance glitch. Then I disabled my Melda Double Tracker on one of the tracks, and it sounds okay.

I only have two plug-ins on each track: Melda Dynamic EQ and Melda Double Tracker

I guess I will not be sending two different presets into Reaper. The resulting sound was a distorted, muddy mess. I tend to play with a lot of gain and I think what I will do instead is send a wet track and a dry track into Reaper. I think that is a better idea and will sound cleaner.

I’m not sure I understand exactly what you’re tying to do, or expecting to hear. Perhaps I’m confused by your terminology. You seem to be talking as if Tone 1 and Tone 2 are different presets. They’re not. Every preset contains a Tone 1 and Tone 2. We’ve discussed how to record both Tones simultaneously and, not surprisingly, they don’t sound good together since you seem to have constructed them as if they were separate presets.

You don’t have to record them to listen to how they sound together. Use the Outputs pages of your X3 Setup section to turn both Tone 1 and Tone 2 ON. Then you will be able to listen to them simultaneously. It should sound the same as your recording - a muddy mess since you created them as separate presets.

Tone 1 and Tone 2 are to be used within a single preset to augment each other. For instance if you’re a solo singer/player you can process your vocals and guitar separately and hear them together. Or if you have a Variax you can process two guitars separately but hear them both.  Or you can have two independent processing paths for the same guitar. In the latter case (which seems to be what you’re doing) you should build them so that they sound good together or perhaps as the rhythm and lead/solo tones while playing a song.

You can, of course, consider them to be completely separate presets and use them accordingly but then don’t expect them to sound good together.
