HX Stomp to PA

My question is about output volume when sending HX Stomp direct to PA mixer.

Here’s a little background: I’ve been using the HX Stomp XL going through the Pinstripe DISO+ then XLR to our Presonus StudioLive 16.4.2. I know I don’t need the DI with the Stomp XL having balanced outputs, but I use it anyway. I have the Stomp XL output set to Line and the volume knob set to phones only. Our sound person says my volume is extremely hot to the board. So much so, that I have the channel volume on my presets set between 2.5 and 3 just to keep the volume down. But all in all, it works fine.

A bandmate got the HX Stomp. We ran a 1/4” TRS - XLR cable from the output direct to the Mixer. He has the same global settings that I do, but his volume was barely registering. We tried using a regular 1/4” cable into a direct box then via XLR to the board, with the same result. The channel volumes in the presets were turned up with no change. Lastly, we went straight 1/4” cable into the Line In of the mixer channel, and the volumes peaked. We left it alone and got through the show, but we are concerned about using an unbalanced connection.

I am looking for some insight here, as I am not sure why there was such a difference, as we had the same global settings. The input gain settings on the mixer were the same as well. Thank you for any thoughts that you may have.

Sounds like a level settings mismatch somewhere among your pieces of equipment. Like you say, you don’t really need the DI with the Stomp XL. Also, an XLR input on the Presonus is probably expecting a MIic not Line, level, input. Try removing the DI box, connecting the Stomp XLR outputs directly to the Presonus, and set the Stomp XLR Ouptut Level to Mic.

HX-Stomp:

I set my main out line level to -20dB for all presets. (Main Out L: FOH, R: IEM)

My Rolls IEM Box expects -20dB. It clipped with a hotter signal.

There is just sensitive gear out there.

I set it to 0dB for recording though.

But at rehearsal and live I use -20dB and it has been perfect for anything anywhere.

Thanks for the reply. The Stomp doesn’t have an XLR out, which is why I used the 1/4” to XLR cable.  But I bet you are right that the Presonus was expecting a specific kind of signal. I just dont know why it’s reacting differently to the Stomp XL, where there is no volume drop.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll take a look at adjusting the output volume. I still don’t know why the Stomp XL was reading so hot while the regular Stomp was so quiet.

I’m just guessing here but….

Did you use one or two 1/4” TRS - XLR cables? If two I suspect there may be some stereo imaging or phasing confusion in the mixer. Also, the Output Level is a preset parameter, not a global setting, so there may still be a level mismatch.

Once you've properly adjusted your output type, the next key factor is your mixer channels. Some inexpensive mixers struggle with handling very low or overly hot (loud) signals.

If that's the case, consider using the Global EQ—not for tonal adjustments, but just to control the output level (increasing or decreasing it as needed). Make sure to apply the Global EQ only to the output socket that's feeding into the mixer, so it doesn't affect other parts of your setup.
