Catalyst 200 and HD500x issues

Hey everyone,

 

I tried searching the forums before posting, but couldn’t find a situation that quite matched what I’m dealing with, so I’m hoping someone here can point me in the right direction.

I recently picked up a Catalyst 200 in great condition and an HD500X (both were too good of a deal to pass up). The problem I’m running into is that the tones coming from the HD500X sound extremely flat, lifeless, and lacking bite or clarity. On top of that, the volume pedal behavior seems off... it doesn’t seem to control the overall volume consistently, and sometimes barely affects the signal at all.

 

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

• 4 Cable Method (4CM): I get sound, but the tone is still very flat and doesn’t feel reactive or dynamic.

 

• Direct into Catalyst FX Return (L/Mono → FX Return): This does work, but the resulting tones still feel dull, washed-out, or missing the rich response I expect from the HD500X.

 

• Factory reset of the HD500X: Completed successfully... same results. Thought maybe there was something changed as it is preowned. (i did create multiple backups)

 

• Followed multiple setup guides (including AI-suggested steps):

• Set Output Mode to "Stack Power Amp"

• Disabled cab and mic sims

• Ensured 1/4” output is set to Line

• Checked levels, routing, etc.

 

• Compared using a BOSS GT-1: The GT-1 plugged in with a simple setup sounds significantly better... much more clarity, responsiveness, and fullness. So I don’t think the issue is with the Catalyst itself(?) right?

 

At this point, I’m almost certain this is a “me” issue and not the gear. I’m new to the HD500X ecosystem and trying to understand how it wants to be set up with the Catalyst, but I’m clearly missing something important. I've also gone down the rabbit hole of the wonderfully detailed MeAmBobbo POD guide but couldn't get much further...

 

If anyone has experience using the HD500X with the Catalyst series (especially through FX Return or 4CM), or general troubleshooting steps I should try, I’d really appreciate any help or suggestions.

I would try "Combo Power Amp"- mode with HD500X and Catalyst 200 fx loop to "Power Amp In" mode.

I never liked my HD500X. Sold it to get Helix.

Sounds great into my Catalyst.
