Variax 700 electric versus acoustic: part numbers,etc

Recommended Posts

Hi !

I bought some months ago a Variax acoustic 700 at a extremely low price, and it turned out that it doesn't have the motherboard.

I understood that it is impossible at this point to buy from line6 or Fullcompass a motherboard, but I see sometimes second hand parts for sale, and this is why I need help with the following:

- What is the part number for the motherboard of an acoustic versus an electric variax 700 ? I see different codes "flying around" (on internet, in photos, forums, etc,etc) such as  "35-00-0005" , "35-00-0137", "50-02-0005-2". Can anyone explain those codes ?

- How can I tell from a picture if a motherboard is for a variax electric 700 or acoustic 700 ?

- In other words: is there any difference in the motherboard of a variax 700 electric versus acoustic ? or is it just the firmware that differs ? I found pictures on internet of both motherboards, and they seem identical (but then maybe one motherboard could have been erroneously identified as electric 700, that is why I ask)

- Have different "revisions" of a motherboard been released ? Could it happen for example that the variax acoustic 700 motherboard changed design throughout the years and there are motherboards around that look slighly different?

thank you !

50-02-0005-2 is the populated board, while the number with the '35' prefix is the bare board with no parts on it.

Acoustic and electric boards are slightly different in hardware and have different programs in them for the guitars

they go into.

The dash two (-2) board is a later revision. In general, things get subtle updates slightly (hardware or firmware),

until the differences become great enough, that it is as far as they can go before create a next generation of product.

Helix vs Helix Stadium XL is an example.

@Dark-StarMany, many thanks for your answer. Please help me a bit further:

35-00-0005: empty PCB of a variax 700 ACOUSTIC -> correct ?

50-02-0005-2: populated PCB,revision 2, for a variax 700 ...acoustic?

35-00-0137: empty PCB of a variax 700......acoustic ? electric?

"MAG1 45-02-0015 Rev 1.05boot"   : firmware of a variax 700 ACOUSTIC -> correct ?

"MG Custom 45-02-0014 Rev 3.10"  : firmware of variax 700 ...electric or acoustic ?

The reason for my questions is that I see on internet for sale second hand motherboards, where the seller doesn't know if it comes from an electric or acoustic, they only post pictures.

I attach one picture of a motherboard I saw on internet. Is it for an electric or an acoustic variax 700? how can you tell ?

Thanks !

I will have to compare it with my 700 electric board at home. Difficult to tel from the photo.

The two diodes and inductor near the connector is a circuit common both. But from what I can see from the circuit traces,

it's not the same as the electric. I did a service bulletin for the 700 electric, this circuit does not look the same.

I will confirm that when I get home later.

Comparing to my 700 Electric Rev-A,... the one in the photo is a 700 Electric, Rev-B,... 96% certain when comparing to the photo.

If it were an acoustic in a electric, you'd be getting weird sounding acoustic patches with all kinds of frequency artifacts.
