HX Effects EXT AMP channel switching with Victory Sheriff 22 — TRS Ring / Latching compatibility

Hello everyone,

I own a Line 6 HX Effects and a Victory Sheriff 22 amplifier. I would like to use the HX Effects EXT AMP relay output to switch between Channel I and Channel II while simultaneously changing HX Effects snapshots.

I contacted Victory Amps support, and they confirmed the following:

"The Sheriff 22 uses a latching short-to-sleeve footswitch; however, a crucial point is that the switching happens on the RING of a TRS cable.

Make sure it is set to LATCHING rather than momentary."

Before connecting the equipment, I would like to confirm a few things with Line 6 users or support:

  1. Can the HX Effects EXT AMP output safely control the Sheriff 22's channel switching?

  2. Can the HX Effects relay be configured to operate in latching mode?

  3. Since the Sheriff 22 switches via the RING contact of a TRS cable, which EXT AMP output and cable wiring should I use?

  4. Does the HX Effects relay connect RING to SLEEVE when activated, or would I need a special TRS cable or adapter?

  5. Has anyone successfully used this exact combination of HX Effects and Victory Sheriff 22?

My goal is to assign channel switching to an HX Effects footswitch so that one press changes the amp channel and the corresponding HX Effects snapshot at the same time.

I would appreciate any technical clarification, especially from someone familiar with the HX Effects relay circuitry.

Thank you!

That should work just fine.

  • Use a TRS cable and connect it to one of the PEDAL/EXT Amp jacks.
  • In Global Settings > Preferences set Pedal 1 (or 2) Jack to EXT AMP.
  • Use the EXT Amp Command as Instand Command in Command Center to switch per snapshot.
  • Use Select = 2 (Ring to Sleeve) and Type = Latching.

HX is not using a relay circuit to switch. It is solid state switching. It can only switch positive voltages and it shares ground with the amp via this connection while relay switches don't care about the current direction and feature galvanic isolation but are more expensive, less reliable and eat up space.

You can measure the Victory's switching jack to make sure it is compatible: put a TRS cable in and measure the voltage between Ring (+) and Sleeve (-) with a multimeter. If that voltage is positive it should work fine.

You can perform a continuity test on the sleeve with the amp's ground to make sure the sleeve IS the amp's ground. That should be a given though.

Please report back when it works for the next guy who asks the same question.

To do this you need to use a snapshot.

EX:

In SS1, set an IC (Instant Command) to EXT AMP and the state you want when the preset loads.

For this example I set it to NONE which should load CH1.

Set a FS to SNAPSHOT 2.

In SS2, set the IC you used on SS! to EXT AMP RING. This should switch to CH2.

When using an IC for EXT AMP you don't get the LATCHING/MOMENTARY  option, LATCHING is the default.

Set the FS to go to whatever SS you want to go to from SS2. The easiest way to do this would be in SS1 PRESS = NEXT; SS2 PRESS = PREV.

However, if you want to go to another SS, either with that FS or another, just be sure that the IC in that SS is set to either EXT AMP NONE or RING.

To test this, attach a continuity tester to the RING and SLEEVE of a TRS cable and toggle the FS.

I've attached the example preset I created for testing. It was created on a Helix Floor but should load on your HXFX.

Title: Victory Sheriff 22 + HX Effects — confirmation of electrical compatibility before connecting

Hello again,

Thank you for the helpful replies so far.

I have now received confirmation directly from Victory Amps support regarding the Sheriff 22 footswitch input:

"The Sheriff 22 uses a latching short-to-sleeve footswitch; however, a crucial point is that the switching happens on the RING of a TRS cable. Make sure it is set to LATCHING rather than momentary."

Based on the advice in this thread, I understand that the HX Effects uses solid-state switching rather than a mechanical relay, and that the EXT AMP command can be configured to switch RING to SLEEVE.

Before connecting my equipment, I would like to clarify the electrical compatibility of this specific combination.

  1. Is the HX Effects EXT AMP output electrically compatible with the Victory Sheriff 22's footswitch input, given that the Sheriff uses latching short-to-sleeve switching on the RING contact of a TRS cable?

  2. The forum reply mentions that the HX Effects can only switch positive voltages. What voltage and polarity range is supported by the HX Effects EXT AMP output?

  3. How exactly should I measure the voltage between RING (+) and SLEEVE (-) at the Sheriff 22 footswitch input? Should the amplifier be powered on, and should the original footswitch be connected or disconnected during the measurement?

  4. Is measuring the voltage between RING and SLEEVE sufficient to establish compatibility, or are there any other electrical characteristics I need to check?

  5. Can I safely use a standard TRS cable with the HX Effects configured as follows?

    • Global Settings → Preferences → Pedal 1 (or 2) Jack = EXT AMP

    • Command Center → Instant Command → EXT AMP

    • Select = 2 (Ring to Sleeve)

    • Latching operation

My goal is to switch between Channel I and Channel II on the Sheriff 22 while simultaneously changing HX Effects snapshots.

I would prefer to verify electrical compatibility before connecting the two devices, to avoid risking damage to either unit.

Thank you for your help.

I repeat: That should work just fine.

You will not hurt your amp or the HX when connecting them via TRS because the Victory is a modern amp that has to comply with modern safety regulations. The measurement stuff is for the case that it doesn't work to figure out why.

  • Thanks 1
