Thanks for the replies. I should have stated that I have an HX Effects, in addition to a Helix. Mea culpa. I usually gig with the HX FX, hence no preamp/power amp models, only pedals. I typically drive an amp with it, either tube or SS run clean and I use the HX FX to provide the dirt and effects. Right now I use two general purpose presets, one based around Dhiyana drive and one around Tone Sovereign, which sorta gets me into Marshall territory. Just wondering if another one is closer.

Any suggestions as to which dirtbox pedal model(s) would provide the best JTM45 -ish/Plexi/MIAB tones? I'm talking EVH brown sound, Allmans, Zep, Deep Purple, that sort of tone, hard blues up to hard rock but not metal. Two of my faves are SL Drive and Charlie Brown. Something like those two, it should clean up fairly well with the guitar volume knob and dropping the pedal gain. Legacy Drive is sorta ok but doesn't clean up very well, even at low gain it's pretty wooly. OCD seems closest. Anyone have anything they've used before that gets close to the mark?

It worked just fine with your advice. Thanks again!

I think I tried that already but will try again. Thanks!

Hi, is there some way to change preset folders manually from the Helix controls, e.g. how to switch from USER1 to USER2, FACTORY1 to USER2, that sort of thing. It is easily done in HX Edit, but cannot figure out how to do it from the Helix panel controls. Thanks!

Once again, you've helped me out - thanks! But truth be told, I didn't read all the documentation for all the FW releases... when I get a chance I'll look through them. Thanks again!

I'd like to run an external expression pedal in EXP3 to control wah blocks to allow onboard expression pedal to be dedicated to volume control only. Can an external expression pedal in EXP3 be set to autoengage, and if so how? Thanks!

Helix Soft Carry Case, An Alternative To The Official Backpack
ucnick replied to Retro-Rick's topic in Helix
Not a backpack guy, carry my guitar in a gig bag on my back, prefer to sling the Helix over my shoulder. So... I bought one of these, works great, nice snug fit, good padding, lotsa pockets. Also low-profile/anonymous. Wife wants the extra bag. Go figure. -
Important safety tip. Thanks Egon! I have some Dunlop DVP4 mini expression pedals that I used with my (cough cough) AX8 that I will likely repurpose. The external pedals come in handy when I need to cover the modeler with clear plastic tarp when drunks holding drinks are cavorting madly on the dance floor. Saved my gear more than once.

OK thanks for the clarification.

I can get nice snappy cleans with the Twin Reverb and some tweaking, although I do use an Ownhammer IR, I think it is a 2x12 Bogner, don't recall which one.

Thanks. Also, I was looking through the FAQs, there is a way to force it to EXP1 globally by using an external 1/4" jack in the EXP2 jack: http://line6.com/support/page/kb/_/effects-controllers/helix/helix-snapshots-and-exp-pedal-recall-r825

Yep I already discovered that, after looking at the global settings information in the manual.

I am a newcomer to Helix. Getting some really great tones. However, whenever I create a patch that requires the built-in EXP, I have noticed that the default expression pedal selected on the unit always seems to be EXP2, unless I save it as EXP1 in a preset. Is there a way to define the default expression pedal as EXP1 globally, or is it only possible locally? Thanks for the help!

Thank you sir! I will be trying this out later this evening!

New Helix owner/user here. Been working with it the past few days and digging the sounds. I've been a Kemper and AX8 user for a few years now, and I find that with a little work I can get some very good tones with the Helix as well, and I love the UI - I needed to use a tablet with the AX8 to display the status. I can see the Helix screen much better and can dispense with the tablet. Anyway... can the Footswitch assignments be split to provide 4 snapshots and 4 stompboxes simultaneously? If so, what is the procedure to achieve this? Can it be done through HX Edit? And also if so, can they also be arbitrarily assigned to provide, say, 3 snapshots and 5 stompboxes? Appreciate the help. Running 2.50, BTW.

I have a Korean JTV-59, incredibly useful in my covers band, and would like to inquire if anyone has developed a model for a Steve Howe Portugese guitar sound-alike (I assume via Workbench)? I have need of one for a Yes trib/old school prog band I am contemplating joining on the side. I've already seen the Squire/Howe rig rundown on YT, so just want to avoid reinventing the wheel if possible. Thanks for any suggestions!

I have recently experienced the same issue with my JTV59 (non-US). I am in a bit of a pique about it. Purchased the JTV59 end of March, worked great, a defintie asset fore my gigging, but needed to add in open E tuning for slide work, so wanted to use the Workbench, which requires ver 2.0 of the FW. Turns out this was a mistake, should have just done it on the axe in the old FW. Anyway, two days ago decided to do the alternate tuning creation. Battery was almost fully charged, should not be an issue. Running 64-bit Win7 home edition on a dual-processor Intel platform. USB connected directly to the PC. After some monkeying around with the software (pun intended) to get all the software ducks in a row, I got the flash updated, sort of. I received an error message box similar to the one below, but it differed in that it said the MIDI drivers were already in use and please correct. Or something to that effect. Uh oh. Unplugged the guitar cord to shut it off and disconnected the USB cable to the PC, then reconnected and powered up the guitar, ran the Monkey, which reported flash 2.0 successfully installed. Hm. Then opened the Workbench, it recognized the guitar, ok great. Created the open E tuning, assigned it to Reso G (not one I am likely to use), uploaded it (successfully, according to the Workbench) and shut it all down. I did not have my guitar plugged into an amp, I assumed it was all straightforward. Bad assumption. Plugged it in last night to woodshed, went into model mode, and... no models or tunings. None. Just the same flat tone, much lower level then the mags. The LED selectror LED lights up as normal, and when I turn to ResoG on the Alt Tuning now the LED turns deep blue, but no models or tunings. At that point, just put it away, I wanted to woodshed my chops, not chase down firmware bugs. So there it sits. When I get a chance, I wll try to reflash (with the guitar connected to an amp this time!) and try to get it to work, but... this is ridiculous. It should not be such a pain to do this, seems the much vaunted Line 6 technology is still a bit hinky and neds some fixes. When I bought my HD300 a few years ago, I tried to update the FW but it was so trouble-filled I gave up, it is still at ver 1.0! I will say the JTV59 models sound and play much better then the old models, they feel like real guitars, and in modelling mode the axe responds almost identically to mag pups,. And the mag pups are pretty good (just have to back them away from the strings to get them to open up). But the software/firmware issues are just plain silly. I am an EE by profession and deal with all kind of SW tools and rarely see anything that is as flaky as this. Well, maybe Windows. But come on, guys. I know it's just a $1000 guitar (!?), please fix this instabilty, if my company sold stuff this flaky we would be in deep trouble. Please fix!
