So in adjusting intonation using the POD tuner, a variation between harmonic and fretted note at the 12th fret which is the width of the "in-tune brackets" would be about .02 2/100th of the distance from E to F ( for example ). I think what I've done is introduced just a bit too much neck relief so may straighten the neck slightly with the rod, then try to deal with any fret buzz around the 8th fret by raising bridge saddles. Whether this will result in lower action and less intonation variance at the 12th for those two strings where I've already moved the saddles as far back as they'll go, I don't know yet. I won't waste too much time trying to make the low E perfect at higher frets -- don't play there much and this isn't a $10k guitar.

I'm working on strat intonation and wondering what the difference is between the left bracket and right bracket of the "tuned" box. Since I'm plucking the strings open, then comparing with fretted at the 12th fret for intonation, would be nice to know what a movement half way across this "tuned" bracket actually represents.

Global input settings: Set input 2 to microphone
Indianrock2020 replied to Indianrock2020's topic in POD HD
I'd be willing to buy an audio interface if it would help, but thought the 500x sort of covers that. I see Asio4All here: http://www.asio4all.com/ So far my recording is simply to share samples with band mates, but it at least has to have the tracks in sync ( drum or original song mp3, my guitar track and my vocal track if any ). Plugging in an xlr mic and fiddling with input 2 is probably going to be more hassle than its worth for this. I may just lay down the mp3 and guitar tracks, then disconnect the laptop from the POD and add any vocal track using the laptop on its own with its built-in mic since this is just for rough demo purposes. I guess a step up from there would be an audio interface to the laptop that I would plug my xlr mic into. -

Ok thanks. Playing guitar and tweaking patches seems like child's play compared to recording and using DAWs :-) -
Global input settings: Set input 2 to microphone
Indianrock2020 replied to Indianrock2020's topic in POD HD
I temporarily set input 2 to mic ( global ). Created a new patch with two "amp" channels, mic in the 2nd one with the "amp" off and just vintage pre plus reverb. All other effects moved to the guitar/amp channel. Panned mixer left right and seemed to have what I wanted after adjusting mic input gain on the back of the POD. Vocal going to stereo system, guitar out of pod to guitar amp. Loaded up a drum pattern mp3 into Audacity, checked that I was getting mic and guitar input ( didn't work with audacity set to using all Line 6 drivers, so had to use Realtek on the laptop ). Anyway, bottom line was upon playback the guitar/mic track wasn't synched exactly with the drum track. I also have Reaper and Presonus Studio ONe, but audacity is quick for what I'm trying to do which is just show a band mate how I'm doing a particular song, nothing more. -

Normally input 2 is set to Variax ( which I don't own ) so the HD500x is really just getting guitar on input 1 and nothing else. For recording to my laptop, I'd like to leave a mic plugged into the POD at home which requires setting input 2 to mic. I'm wondering if I set it that way globally, will I achieve the same advantage as variax ( not overloading input such as if both inputs are set to guitar ) ?

I removed the original post text. I just pulled up a brand new Treadplate patch and every knob was straight up except cab parameters all zero.

Best way to monitor when tweaking patches
Indianrock2020 replied to Indianrock2020's topic in POD HD
I am thinking through that headphones might be best for using the parametric EQ to tame an overdrive. Through this stereo I'm really having a tough time picking out the bad frequency to cut the way Peter shows in his second video here: http://www.peterhanmer.co.za/line6.htm -
I'm sure this has been covered so if there is a good thread, please paste in the link. I've been using a home stereo receiver with a couple of decent speakers along with a Rolls PM 351 so I can blend the POD output with a microphone. Laptop runs into the POD so I can play along with mp3s. People have mentioned how what you hear varies by time of day, fatigue, etc -- and that sure is true. Today I tried some quality headphones and everything sounded better, naturally. But I want the patches to work direct into a PA, along with a band ( so I know I will have to add mids and probably reduce bass in that situation). I did try pointing the stereo speakers out away from me somewhat -- everything seems to sound worse when its going right into your face.

Best eq to boost mids cleanly and assign to Exp pedal
Indianrock2020 replied to Indianrock2020's topic in POD HD
Interesting. Yes I see that on the Vox AC 30 TB I normally use, it is a cut. But when you assign amp 'mids' to the Expression pedal it doesn't show cut at all. This clip was just thrown together as I looked at rhythm possiblities on this David Crowder song -- normally the rhythm would be much lower in the mix. But at 33 seconds I pushed the "mids" ( cut ) up and you can hear what it did. https://soundcloud.com/indianrock-1/04-lift-your-head-weary-sinnerclip -

That's an interesting idea. So maybe 40% mids on the amp with pedal up and 75% with pedal all the way down. -

Thanks. I see the EQ details were covered here: http://line6.com/support/topic/335-frequency-response-graphs-for-hd500-eqs/ -
In our church the guitars often get buried in the mix when you have 200 people singing. The volunteer sound techs can't really deal with it so I'd like to assign an EQ effect to the expression pedal for a boost to mids. If I boost volume it would probably impact other band members' in-ear mix , which I don't want. So I need to choose which effect in my 500x and what frequencies to emphasize. I'm usually playing rhythm guitar with a Carvin AE185 ( blend of humbuckers and acoustic bridge pickup ). Normally a clean patch using Vox AC30 and hall reverb. http://www.independentrecording.net/irn/resources/freqchart/main_display.htm

Brand-new HD500X ... huge volume differences between presets
Indianrock2020 replied to bobwilken's topic in POD HD
Yes I see you can move effects in front of the mixer to get the mixer at the end of the chain. I think I'd rather avoid clipping and level my output for the sound guy by leaving the master almost all the way up and never touch it again ( balancing patch volumes with the other adjustments .) I mean the master knob on top of the unit ( some amps also have a "master" adjustment ) From the advanced guide: "Having said all that, it is recommended that you start with the Master Volume control set to minimum and slowly turn the control clockwise towards maximum before any audio clipping (the bad kind of distortion) occurs." The only time I noticed clipping it sounded like a pop in my home stereo system ( which is my monitoring setup ) and so far has only occurred running tube drive in front of amp with analog chorus farther down the chain. -

Thanks JTSC777 Support here is really great. I'm constantly encouraging people not to give up on the PODs -- there is a learning curve but no heavy amps to tote, etc etc. Ok so System master knob should not be at 100%. I can't seem to move the mixer in HD Edit. I've been setting the amp channel volume quite high ( using the AC30 TB more than anything else but trying the Highway 100 lately for less clean situations ). Where the amp has it, I turn the amp "master" parameter almost all the way up and in cab parameters set the low cut and res level to about 9 o'clock. The only clipping I've ever experienced was today using the Tube driver, AC30 and an analog chorus. Turning off the chorus got rid of the clipping. Screamer doesn't seem to overload the chorus. Moving the chorus ahead of the tube driver solves it but I don't think that's where chorus should be. -
I experienced what I think is clipping today with a tube driver in front of an amp and analog chorus after the amp. I'd get an occasional "click" through my speakers. Screamer doesn't do that and tube driver didn't do it with the chorus turned off.

Brand-new HD500X ... huge volume differences between presets
Indianrock2020 replied to bobwilken's topic in POD HD
I read almost everything here. Was there a conclusion that putting the mixer at the end of each patch was ok? So far I don't use volume pedal effects at all and leave the expression pedal all the way down at all times ( not used ). Master volume knob 100%. I do need to even out the patches so the sound guy gets the same signal level.( church situation - all in-ears with no amps on stage ) Right now I'm only using two patches -- one has dotted-eighth delay set in advance for a song ( not using tap tempo as there isn't time for that ). The other patch is sort of generic AC30 with some hall reverb and a touch of chorus after the amp with overdrives assigned to footswitches before the amp. The screamer and a parametric EQ are assigned to a single footswitch since the EQ is to tailor the OD. Noise Gate>OD+eq>amp>MIXER>chorus>reverb So I'm wondering about putting the mixer at the end for the purpose of leveling the patch volumes. -
no phantom power needed. I'll check that xlr gain control, thanks. I'm assuming that setting input 2 to mic is what I want. Creating a separate patch for this since normally I use guitar on input 1 and variax on input 2 as the global option for better signal ( no actual variax ).
-
Ok created a new patch with input 1 Guitar and input 2 mic with xlr mic plugged into the 500x. USB to laptop into audacity. I was getting signals from both guitar and mic into audacity but couldn't see how to boost the mic level which was very low. ?
-
So you run your guitar and mic into the Bean, then usb out of Bean to computer running Reaper. Then add some reverb to the vocal track in Reaper ( for a little ambience ).
-
I've been recording by setting a laptop in the room and using its built-in microphone -- not very good. My guitar runs into the POD then into a decent home stereo via a small Rolls mixer. The vocal microphone runs into the Rolls, then into the stereo system and out into good speakers. How are some of you accomplishing this when you just want a quick simple track to share with a band mate? I don't plan on doing any post-recording mixing/polishing. I do have a spare xlr mic that could be used. Thinking about one of these so I can avoid the laptop's internal mic: Blue Microphones Icicle XLR to USB Mic Converter/Mic Preamp I've wanted the room ambience in the vocal portion of the recording but if set up direct I suppose reverb could be added either in the POD or in Audacity.

I"m going to have to study that graphic for a while. "shiva" is that one of the high gain models?
-
Is that where you usually put your EQs -- at the end?
